Responsibilities
- Reviews electrical plans, drawings, and construction specifications submitted with permit applications to determine compliance with the electrical provisions of the municipal building code and applicable regulations.
- Evaluates proposed electrical systems, materials, equipment, and installation methods for compliance with approved standards and code requirements.
- Identifies non‑compliant conditions within submitted plans and specifications, explains applicable code requirements, and recommends corrective measures necessary to achieve compliance.
- Conducts field inspections of new construction, rehabilitation, alteration, repair, and maintenance projects to ensure electrical work is performed in accordance with approved permit plans, construction specifications, and municipal code requirements.
- Verifies that electrical materials, equipment, and methods of installation comply with applicable code standards and approved permit documents.
- Inspects job sites to confirm required permits have been obtained and that electrical work is being performed by properly licensed and bonded electrical contractors.
- Interprets and explains electrical code requirements, inspection findings, and code violations to contractors, property owners, tenants, design professionals, and other stakeholders.
- Issues citations, notices of violation, stop‑work orders, or other enforcement actions for violations of the municipal electrical code and related ordinances.
- Conducts follow‑up and re‑inspections to verify correction of cited violations and compliance with approved permit requirements.
- Investigates complaints related to electrical work, unsafe conditions, or unpermitted installations and documents inspection findings.
- Prepares inspection reports, violation notices, correspondence, and related documentation concerning inspection and enforcement activities.
- Maintains accurate records of inspections, code violations, enforcement actions, and permit compliance activities.
- Testifies at administrative hearings, court proceedings, or other legal proceedings regarding inspections conducted, violations identified, and citations issued.
- Coordinates with other departmental personnel, regulatory agencies, utility representatives, and public safety officials regarding code compliance and enforcement matters.
Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Electrical apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; OR
- Successful completion of an industry or company‑sponsored apprenticeship training program as an Electrical Mechanic, PLUS two (2) years of journey‑level experience as an electrical mechanic.
- Six (6) years of journey‑level experience as an electrical mechanic.
- A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.
- City of Chicago Supervising Electrician license.
- Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 134 (Bargaining Unit #32).
