Communications Maintainer
Metra’s Communications Maintainer installs, inspects, and tests all indoor and outdoor communication systems across various locations. This includes maintenance and repair of VHF/UHF radios, radio dispatching systems, public address and video surveillance systems, automatic revenue collection equipment, alarm monitors, GPS networks, fiber optic systems, and communication computer networks. The role also involves component and circuit board level repair as well as macroscopic troubleshooting of major systems, ensuring compliance with all railroad rules, safety, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
The position is subject to on-call status, nights, weekends, and holidays per the union contract and is a Union position.
- Install, inspect, and test all indoor and outdoor communication systems.
- Perform maintenance and repair of telecommunication equipment including radios, dispatching systems, PA and video surveillance, revenue collection equipment, alarm monitors, GPS, fiber optics, and computer networks.
- Conduct component and circuit board level repair and macroscopic troubleshooting of major systems.
- Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety, operations, and FRA regulations.
- Maintain on‑call status per union contract.
- Associate degree in Electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience equal to two (2) years.
- Three (3) years of communications work experience that includes board‑level radio communication, RF repair, inside/outside plant telecommunications equipment/systems, or computer/networking.
- Operating Rules qualified within six (6) months of hire.
- Able to obtain CDL‑A license or permit within 60 days after hiring.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Preferred:
Federal Communications Commission License.
