We are seeking a Maintenance & Service Technician to join our team, reporting directly to the Area Maintenance Manager. The ideal candidate resides in the Chicago, IL area.
This is a residence-based role involving daily travel to customer sites within approximately a 250-mile radius. You will install, repair, and maintain cryogenic liquid, industrial gas, and process gas supply systems—including pumping, high-pressure compression, and gas generation equipment. Key Responsibilities
- Service Air Products cryogenic, high-pressure, and generated gas systems, along with associated equipment, at customer sites throughout the assigned region.
- Occasionally supervise contractors and crane operations.
- Participate in after-hours and weekend call-outs as needed; maintain 24/7 availability.
- Utilize company-provided laptop, truck, gas card, uniforms, and tools.
- Travel includes some overnight stays—more frequent during the first six months for training purposes.
- Overnight stays may also be required to support customers outside of your normal territory when needed to support the business.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform tasks such as driving, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, tightening, loosening, drilling, sawing, crawling, bending, shoveling, and wrenching. Work is performed outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong commitment to safety—priority over production, efficiency, schedule, or external pressures.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree preferred but not required.
- Valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record.
Technical Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with tools such as drills/impact drivers, portable grinders, bandsaws, general hand tools, brazing torches, electrical multi meters (including input simulators), and ladders.
- Welding or brazing experience is a plus.
- Safety:
Ability to learn, understand, and comply with company safety procedures. - Safety Work Permits:
Experience working as both issuer and receiver. - Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO):
Knowledge of and compliance with LOTO procedures to ensure safe maintenance conditions. - Strong troubleshooting abilities with a big-picture, diagnostic mindset.
Electrical
- Comfortable working on de-energized circuits up to 480V.
- Able to trace and measure voltage/amperage on instrumentation circuits by following elementary loop diagrams and/or via phone support with engineers.
- Understanding of 4–20 mA instrumentation signals and loops.
Mechanical
- Understanding of piping systems, regulators, valves, relief devices, pumps, and compressors.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams).
- Effective communication skills to interface with customers, management, sales, and engineering.
- Self-starter with strong learning aptitude and desire for professional growth.
- Comfortable working independently for extended periods as well as collaborating with others.
