Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Steamfitter Foreman, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs and maintains piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, hydraulic and steam pipeline systems. Maintains steam heating plants, steam power lines, pumps and oil lines. Inspects work sites to determine presence of obstructions and structural weaknesses. Plans sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and coordinate with other construction workers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
- Lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and maintain piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, hydraulic and steam pipeline systems.
- Maintain steam heating plants, steam power lines, pumps, and oil lines.
- Inspect work sites to identify obstructions and structural weaknesses.
- Plan installation sequences to avoid obstructions and coordinate with other construction workers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Successful completion of a recognized Steamfitter Journeyman Apprenticeship Program or five years of full‑time experience as a Steamfitter.
- Valid certification in Pipe Welding as recognized by the American Welding Society.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
- Position is safety‑sensitive; must pass required drug test as part of the pre‑employment background check.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of the steamfitter trade, including tools and installation, repair, alteration, and fabrication of materials according to specifications.
- Ability to read and accurately follow construction blueprints pertaining to area of expertise.
- Skill in welding techniques.
- Working knowledge of shop mathematics.
- Ability to use hand, power cutting, threading and pipe bending equipment.
- Knowledge of techniques used to achieve air and water‑tight connections such as caulking, packing and use of gaskets.
- Knowledge of piping and connections used in power, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and chlorinating systems.
- Knowledge of the working properties of wrought iron, cast iron, steel, copper, brass, bronze, lead‑lined and rubber‑lined pipes.
- Requires moderate to extensive travel throughout Cook County; must provide own transportation.
- Requires various types of physical exertion, including lifting, pulling, pushing and moving moderate to heavy objects.
Very Heavy Work:
Exertion in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, over 50 pounds frequently or over 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Preference given to honorably discharged Veterans who served more than 180 consecutive days or during wartime.
- Candidate must meet the minimum qualifications and identify themselves as a veteran on the application.
- Provide a copy of DD‑214, DD‑215 or NGB‑22 at time of application.
- Coast Guard veterans must submit certified separation documents from the Department of Transportation or Department of Homeland Security.
