Role DescriptionThe Union Door Technician is a full‑time hybrid role based in the Greater Chicago Area, with primary work performed on‑site at customer locations and some administrative tasks completed from home. Day‑to‑day responsibilities include installing, servicing, and repairing commercial doors and hardware, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, and performing routine inspections. The technician will read and interpret technical drawings and work orders, use hand and power tools safely, and ensure all work meets safety and building code standards.
The role also involves communicating with customers and dispatch, documenting work performed, maintaining a clean and organized work area, and collaborating with team members and union representatives as needed.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with hand and power tools, preferably in commercial doors, construction, or a closely related trade.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and work orders, and follow detailed installation and repair procedures.
- Knowledge of basic electrical and hardware components related to door systems, or willingness to learn through on‑the‑job and union training.
- Commitment to safety practices, including adherence to OSHA guidelines, use of personal protective equipment, and safe driving habits.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with customers, supervisors, and union representatives, and for documenting service work clearly and accurately.
- Reliable transportation to job sites in the Greater Chicago Area and ability to work in varying weather and site conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent; prior experience as a door technician, installer, or similar role is preferred but not required.
- Ability to meet union membership requirements and work within union rules and collective bargaining agreements.
