Overview

CARPENTER (DEPARTMENT OF FACILITIES MANAGEMENT) – COUPE-CARP 13 (DOC 2650 S. California Ave).

Location:

Criminal Court Administration, 2650 S. California. This is a full-time position with standard government benefits and safety-sensitive requirements.

• Plan and carry out the construction, installation and repair of structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard using carpenter's hand tools and power tools in conformance with local building codes.
• Shape materials to prescribed measurements using saws, chisels, and planes; assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
• Verify trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level; study blueprints and building plans to determine materials and dimensions needed.
• Build stairs, lay and install partitions and cabinet work; cover subfloor with building paper to prevent moisture and install hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block floors by nailing or adhering as appropriate.

• Successful completion of an approved and recognized Carpentry apprenticeship program; OR five (5) years of full-time professional experience as a Carpenter is required.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
• This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

• Thorough and extensive knowledge in the principles, methods, and technologies of modern carpentry.
• Ability to perform essential job duties; position involves standing, walking, lifting, pushing, and other physical exertion.
• Skill in the use and operation of hand and power tools.
• Skill in reading and following blueprints, sketches and other instructions.
• Thorough knowledge of lumber, wood products and related construction materials.
• Knowledge of city, state and local building codes as they relate to carpentry and general construction.
• Position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County; employee must provide own transportation.

• Very Heavy work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
