Working Hours

Full-time. Shift: 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Steamfitter Foreman, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and maintains piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, hydraulic and steam pipeline systems. Maintains steam heating plants, steam power lines, pumps, and oil lines. Inspects work sites to determine obstructions and structural weakness. Plans sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved and recognized Steamfitter Journeyman Apprenticeship Program or five (5) years full‑time experience as a Steamfitter.
  • Valid certification in Pipe Welding recognized by the American Welding Society.
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Must pass a required drug test as part of the pre‑employment background check for this safety‑sensitive position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of the steamfitter trade, including tools and the installation, repair, alteration, fabrication, etc. of materials according to specifications.

  • Ability to read and accurately follow construction blueprints.
  • Skill in welding techniques.
  • Working knowledge of shop mathematics.
  • Ability to use hand, power cutting, threading and pipe bending equipment.
  • Knowledge of techniques for air and water tight connections such as caulking, packing, and use of gaskets.
  • Knowledge of piping and connections used in power, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, and chlorinating systems.
  • Knowledge of the working properties of wrought iron, cast iron, steel, copper, brass, bronze, lead‑lined and rubber‑lined pipes.
  • Moderate to extensive travel within Cook County, with own means of transportation.
  • Physical exertion: lifting, pulling, pushing and moving moderate to heavy‑weight objects.
Physical Requirements

Very heavy work involving exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 50 pounds of force frequently, or 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Veteran’s Preference

Preference given to honorably discharged Veterans with more than 180 consecutive days of service or wartime service. Veterans must identify themselves as such on the application and attach an original DD‑214, DD‑215, or NGB 22, with the most recent document if multiple are available. Certified copies may be submitted for Coast Guard service. Veterans must provide original discharge papers at the time of interview.
