Job Summary Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of skilled painting tasks within the Painting trade in the application of paint to a variety of surfaces with brush, roller and spray gun. Independently determines correct methods of application and selection of proper materials.

Please Note Must be a member of Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Workers Local 681, or join after 30 days. Physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy weights, climb and descend ladders, and work in hot, cold, cramped and confined quarters. Ability to work safely and at heights on ladders, lifts and scaffolding. Dexterity necessary for the use of tools and manipulation of materials.

Must be available and capable of responding to irregularities during evenings and weekends ensuring 24 hour, 7 day per week coverage

Specific Responsibilities
  • Applies primers, paints, lacquers, varnishes, scalers, fillers and stains to interior and exterior of buildings and surfaces;
  • Cleans materials to be painted by use of sandpaper, scrappers, sanding machines and dusters;
  • Washes and prepares surfaces for painting, staining or sealing;
  • Mixes and matches paint and stain using the proper proportions of tint, base and thinner;
  • Performs taping to drywall surfaces;
  • Prepares, cuts and hangs wall coverings;

Miscellaneous:
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
  • Training and/or development experience equivalent to a full apprenticeship (five (5) years) plus relevant work experience of two (2) years or more;
  • Be a member of Laborers Local 681, or join after one month of employment;
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Illinois, provide own reliable transportation, and purchase a University parking permit (if applicable).
Minimum

Competencies:

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, application methods and standard trade safety practices;
  • Complete knowledge of the proper handling, mixing and disposal of toxic or potentially hazardous materials;
  • Must have good written & oral communications & listening skills;
  • Physical ability to climb and descend ladders work on scaffolding lift or other support apparatus and to work in cramped quarters. Dexterity is necessary for the use of tools and manipulation of materials;
  • Receptive to feedback, willing to learn, embracing of continuous improvement;
  • Helpful, respectful, approachable, collaborative, team oriented;
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment;
  • Integrates health and safety precautions into daily activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with mobile devices including iOS;
  • Proficiency with software programs including Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook;
    Kronos; CMMS systems.

Target hiring pay for this position will be $52.08 per hour as determined by the Local 681 CBA. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
