Med Ex Ambulance Service is a leading provider of emergency and non-emergency medical transportation throughout the Chicagoland area. We are seeking a skilled and dependable Fleet Mechanic (Emergency Vehicle Technician) to join our Fleet Maintenance Department at our Skokie headquarters.
This position is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing our modern fleet of gasoline-powered ambulances, wheelchair vans, and support vehicles. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with strong diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining vehicles that safely serve our patients and crews 24 hours a day.

Position Summary
The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Med Ex emergency vehicles to ensure they remain safe, reliable, and compliant with all applicable state and federal regulations. This position performs preventative maintenance, advanced mechanical and electrical diagnostics, repairs specialized ambulance equipment, and maintains accurate maintenance records.
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on ambulances, wheelchair vans, and support vehicles.
- Complete oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, tire rotations, fluid services, and chassis lubrication.
- Identify maintenance concerns before they become major repairs.
Diagnostics & Repairs
- Diagnose and repair gasoline-powered engines, drive trains, steering, suspension, braking, HVAC, and electrical systems.
- Utilize OEM diagnostic software, scan tools, multimeters, and other testing equipment.
- Troubleshoot engine performance issues, electrical faults, charging systems, and drivability concerns.
- Perform repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards.
Emergency Vehicle Systems
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair emergency lighting, sirens, warning systems, communication equipment, power inverters, battery systems, shoreline charging systems, and other ambulance-specific electrical components.
- Maintain stretcher loading systems, interior lighting, patient compartment accessories, and auxiliary equipment.
- Coordinate repairs with outside vendors when specialized service is required.
Fleet Safety & Compliance
- Ensure vehicles meet Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and applicable federal safety requirements.
- Perform pre-service inspections prior to vehicles returning to operation.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Follow all OSHA safety standards and company safety policies.
Documentation
- Accurately document inspections, repairs, parts usage, labor time, and maintenance history within the company's fleet maintenance software.
- Assist with maintaining maintenance schedules and vehicle service records.
- Communicate repair recommendations and vehicle status with Fleet Management.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional automotive, fleet, or commercial vehicle repair experience.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to diagnose and repair gasoline-powered vehicles.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Ownership of a standard set of automotive hand tools.
Preferred
- 3-5 years of fleet or commercial vehicle maintenance experience.
- Experience servicing Ford E-Series, Ford Transit, Chevrolet, or other light-to-medium duty commercial vehicles.
- ASE Certifications.
- Ford Factory Training.
- Experience with ambulance electrical systems and emergency vehicle equipment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of automotive electrical systems.
- Proficiency using scan tools, diagnostic software, and digital multimeters.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and service manuals.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Commitment to quality workmanship and customer service.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
. - Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, bend, and work underneath vehicles for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate vehicle lifts, jacks, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to work in varying shop temperatures and conditions.
