Student Special Services Advocate
Position type:
Union Position. Salary range: $55,277.94 to $83,291.77.
Under general supervision, serves as an advocate for at‑risk young adults and school‑aged parents in connection with social, educational, and job training services; performs related duties as required.
Responsibilities- Review school records to identify at‑risk young adults and school‑aged parents who have dropped out.
- Visit and counsel those individuals, encouraging their return to school.
- Confere with school counselors and clients to establish educational programs suitable to their lifestyles.
- Develop resource networks and accompany clients to social service agencies for services and referrals.
- Assist clients in enrolling in G.E.D. courses, evening school courses, and job training programs.
- Confere with employers of at‑risk young adults to discuss possible reduction of work hours to allow continued education.
- Maintain client case files and provide follow‑up services.
- Assist in compiling periodic activity reports for supervisory staff and program government funding sources.
- Meet with community organizations to distribute literature and explain available services.
- May counsel student‑athletes to ensure they meet college academic entrance requirements.
- Training and Experience
:
Graduation from an accredited educational institution with an Associate’s degree, or successful completion of two years of college‑level coursework at an accredited college or university supplemented by four years of progressively responsible experience in community or social service organizations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. - Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
:
Considerable knowledge of the functions of social service agencies; sensitivity to the needs of at‑risk young adults and school‑aged parents; understanding of social service program development concepts. - Ability to work with and for at‑risk young adults and school‑aged parents, to establish and expand community and social service networks, and to maintain accurate records.
- Good oral and written communication skills and thorough ability to evaluate and meet clients’ social service needs.
- Skill in coordinating the efforts of various social service agencies and community organizations.
- Physical Requirements
:
Light work involving up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently; qualifies as Light Work (1) when walking or standing is required for a significant degree, or (2) when sitting most of the time but involves pushing or pulling of arm controls.
