The basic function of the School Social Worker is to help students and families make the best use of available opportunities and resources and to fully develop each student's individual potential.

Responsibilities include:

Participating as a member of the multi-disciplinary team by conducting school social work components as part of the evaluation process. Serving as a consultant to school personnel for student educational and/or behavioral interventions in order to assist in the development of a constructive learning environment so that optimum learning may occur. Providing direct services and/or interventions as designated on the student's IEP.

Working cooperatively with administrators and staff, parents, students and community agencies. Promoting regular school attendance. Providing individual counseling and facilitating group sessions. Promoting safe, caring, and drug-free schools. Working with students on self-esteem and anger management. Providing crisis intervention services. Serving as liaison between school/family/community. Referring students and parents to appropriate community services. Assisting families with the interpretation of school policies and procedures.

Understanding and practicing in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, statutes, and policies that relate to students and families. Maintaining materials and accurate case records and documentation. Other duties assigned by school administration.
