AI Engineer, Software Engineer
The Applied AI team at Balyasny Asset Management builds BamGPT — BAM's internal AI platform for assistants, deep research, enterprise integrations, and scheduled workflows. Our next major push is agents: persistent AI systems that can execute multi-step tasks, collaborate with users, and operate inside real investment workflows.
We're looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to own large parts of that experience. You'll work primarily in React, Type Script, and Next.js, building interfaces for streaming agent output, long-running workflows, tool execution, file-aware research, and the controls that help users understand and steer agent behavior. The products you build will be used daily by portfolio managers, analysts, and researchers across the firm.
WhatYou'll Do
- Build the core UI for BAM's AI workspace — assistants, agentic workflows, deep research, scheduled prompts, and multi-agent collaboration
- Design experiences for streaming responses, asynchronous runs, tool execution, and long-running agent tasks including progress, intervention, and failure recovery
- Develop reusable rendering systems for tool and plugin outputs, structured results, citations, and rich AI artifacts
- Drive frontend architecture across state management, rendering strategy, performance, testing, and observability
- Partner with backend and ML engineers to translate model and agent capabilities into reliable, legible user experiences
- Mentor engineers and contribute to technical standards across the platform
- Participate in on‑call rotations for production issues affecting the user experience
- 10+ years of professional software development with substantial modern frontend experience
- Expert-level React and Type Script
- Strong Next.js experience and fluency with modern frontend architecture patterns
- Experience building streaming or asynchronous UIs with robust loading, retry, and error states
- Strong understanding of state management, caching, rendering tradeoffs, and performance optimization
- Experience building reusable component systems in large codebases
- Solid testing discipline across unit, integration, and end‑to‑end layers
- Strong product and UX judgment for complex, information-dense tools
- Experience shipping AI-native or agentic product features in production
- Familiarity with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar)
- Experience with human-in-the-loop design: approvals, intervention, agent supervision
- Familiarity with Node.js or Python and comfort working across the stack
- Experience with enterprise auth, permissions, and integration-aware UX
- Experience with observability tools such as Sentry or Grafana
- Background building tools for expert users in demanding domains — finance, devtools, security, research
You're joining one of the world's top hedge funds to work on the technology that has everyone's attention right now. Agents, LLMs, and agentic workflows are the frontier, and you'll be building production systems around it. Walk the floor and you'll see your apps on almost everyone’s screens. The feedback loop is immediate. People are using what you build and are making consequential decisions with it every day.
That kind of proximity to impact is rare in any engineering role.
