As a Capital One Director of Software Engineering, you will work on customer‑facing web and mobile applications, highly‑available RESTful microservices, back‑end Java‑based systems, and machine learning models using emerging and traditional technologies such as Claude Code, Windsurf, node.js, Java, GO, AngularJS, React, Python, REST, JSON, XML, Ruby, Perl, No

SQL, Spark, Artifactory, Maven, iOS, Android, and AWS/Cloud Infrastructure.

• Lead, manage, and grow multiple teams of product‑focused software engineers.
• Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers on your team.
• Collaborate with product managers to understand desired application capabilities and testing scenarios.
• Continuously improve software engineering practices.
• Work within and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across full‑stack development tools and technologies.
• Ensure craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of solutions.
• Stay on top of technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal and external technology communities, and mentor other members of the engineering community.
• Encourage innovation, adoption of cutting‑edge technologies, inclusion, outside‑of‑the‑box thinking, teamwork, self‑organization, and diversity.
• Improve the velocity of your and other teams.
• Lead efforts to deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments.
• Transition monolithic applications to micro‑service architectures and build new microservices.

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• At least 7 years of experience in software development.
• At least 5 years of experience in people management.

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering.
• 10+ years of experience in software development.
• 5+ years of experience in Agile practices.
• Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity beyond basic code completion.

Salary ranges by location:
Chicago, IL: $244,700 - $279,200;
McLean, VA: $269,100 - $307,200. Eligibility for performance‑based incentive compensation, including cash bonus(es) and long‑term incentives. Capital One offers a comprehensive, competitive, and inclusive set of health, financial, and other benefits.
