Description and OverviewGeneral
Summary:
Under immediate supervision; performs work of routine difficulty in completing unskilled manual work relating to basic highway maintenance functions as assigned; performs related work as required. This is routine work consisting of unskilled manual tasks. The duties require ability to do physical labor efficiently. Laborers work under the immediate supervision of higher-level positions that lay out the details of each specific assignment and constantly check the work in progress and upon completion.
Must be 18 years old by start date.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities- Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber.
- Cold patches streets by shoveling mix off truck, placing in hole and tamping.
- Carrying or lifting lumber.
- Sweeps streets, gutters and sidewalks by hand.
- Shovels, gravel and dirt.
- Cuts brush.
- Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance of streets.
- Drives truck to and from job.
- Cleans, oils and greases equipment.
- Operates Zero-turn mowers, weed whackers, and other lawn and garden tools.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Some knowledge of the handling and care of tools involved in manual labor, including auto repair and road maintenance work.
- General Construction Experience.
- Some skill in performing manual labor.
- Some skill in handling and caring for tools and other equipment.
- Some skill in following simple oral instructions.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.

Working Conditions While Performing Essential FunctionsWork performed in the field are subject to conditions including, but not limited to working alongside the roadway with moving vehicles, near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, in outside weather conditions, with hazardous materials, with fumes or airborne particles, and in cramped or confined spaces. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and use hands to operate equipment and vehicles, reach with hands and arms, climb, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
