Essential Duties- Drive service vehicle (e.g., diesel truck equipped with compressor) to various field sites to change out and replace damaged tires on city vehicles, including vans, refuse trucks, snow plows, street sweepers, fire trucks, ambulances and other vehicles (with the exception of heavy operating equipment).
- Check damaged/flat tire(s) and wheel area on vehicles to assess damage and ensure that tire(s) can be safely changed out and replaced in the field.
- Operate manual or air-operated jacks to lift vehicle off the ground and use power and hand tools (e.g., impact wrenches, sockets, lug nut torquing guns) to loosen, remove and tighten lug nuts.
- Remount wheel onto vehicle to replace damaged tires and tighten lug nuts.
- Lift and roll tires from service truck, and load and unload tools needed to replace tires.
- Unload and return damaged tires to service garage for repair by contracted vendors.
- Transport vehicles, materials, tools, equipment and personnel to and from city and/or vendor locations.
- Work inside a service garage to change out and replace tires on vehicles as directed.
- Repair damaged tires as needed, using appropriate hand tools.
- Load service truck with needed supply of tires, hand tools and power tools at start of shift.
- Conduct safety inspections to ensure assigned vehicles and related equipment are in proper working order.
- Complete and submit activity logs and repair orders to document work assignments.

6:00 AM – 2:30 PM; 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM; 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM; 3:30 PM – 11:30 PM
- One year of automotive maintenance or tire repair work experience in an automotive repair shop, tire service shop, car dealership or related automotive service facility.
- Valid State of Illinois Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with “P” and “X” endorsements.
- Ability to operate vehicles equipped with full air brake systems.
Provide a copy of your valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “A” with a “X” and “P” endorsement at the time of application. Failure to provide this information at the time of application will result in an incomplete application. Applicants cannot have restrictions on their CDL that limit operation of equipment.
Working Conditions- Primarily field work with exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- Automotive service garage facility.
- Personal protective equipment (steel toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, vest).
- Hand and power tools used in replacing and mounting tires on vehicles (impact wrenches, lug nut torquing guns).
- Standard tools and materials used in tire repair.
- Heavy lifting (up to 85 pounds) required.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended or continuous periods.
- Ability to perform physical activities requiring considerable use of arms, legs and body to bend, stretch, twist or reach.
- Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
This is a Non-Interview, No-Test Title. Positions are hired in seniority order. External applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and possess the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be hired in a lottery/random order.
