General Description
This 12‑week seasonal position involves operating a commercial motor vehicle to pick up and deliver donated products to the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) throughout the Chicagoland area. The role requires a strong commitment to customer service, ensuring positive interactions with donors and member agencies. Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions- Operate a commercial motor vehicle to pick up and deliver products donated to the GCFD in an efficient, timely, and safe manner.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records of all pickup and delivery transactions, reporting any discrepancies to the dispatcher.
- Evaluate the suitability of donated products for distribution to GCFD member agencies. Communicate information regarding donation volume, quality or changes in truck route, and unnecessary waiting times to the dispatcher.
- Maintain cleanliness of assigned motor vehicles; ensure that all pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle maintenance and safety checklists are completed daily. Report any issues to the supervisor immediately.
- Maintain, and account for all assigned GCFD equipment such as phones, load bars, freezer blankets, roll‑off tracks, electric and manual jacks, etc.
- Oversee truck helper on route.
- Replace improperly cared for GCFD equipment.
- Load and off‑load freight products manually and with use of manual and electric pallet jacks and forklift.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- 1–2 years of Class B vehicle major city driving experience, preferably in the Chicagoland area.
- Possess a valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with Class B and air‑brake endorsement and a clean driving record (MVR).
- Drive manual and automatic transmission CDL‑rated trucks up to 36,000 gross vehicle weight.
- Have the ability to operate material handling equipment.
- Need air‑brake endorsement.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for coordination with dispatcher, donors, staff and member agencies.
- Capable of obtaining a Food Handling and Sanitation Certificate.
- Ability to perform basic math computations using a calculator.
- Lift a minimum of 50 lbs and carry between equipment and vehicles.
- Submit to periodic substance/drug screening based on a random unannounced selection process required by IL DOT.
- Climb and move in and out between equipment and vehicles with ease.
- Normal warehouse environment; exposure to inclement driving weather and refrigerator/freezer conditions.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required, contingent upon events.
- Interact with GCFD staff, donors, member agencies, general public, volunteers, news and public relations, and media personnel.
As a part‑time and/or seasonal position, this position will not be eligible to participate in the employee benefits programs that the Food Depository may establish and make available to full‑time, permanent employees; however, the position will be entitled to benefits required under applicable law, including under the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance.
