Brief

Description:

The Building Custodian is an essential member of the school staff who cleans and maintains the facility to ensure a sanitary, clean, attractive, and safe environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform janitorial work in assigned areas, entire school facility, and/or exterior of the facility to keep it neat, clean, sanitary, safe, and secure
  • Pick up rubbish and debris
  • Empty waste baskets and recycle
  • Dust visible and non‑visible surfaces
  • Sweep/mop all floors, walls, halls, rooms, bathrooms, etc.
  • Varnish, strip, wax floors; steam‑clean carpets as required
  • Vacuum carpets; wash and disinfect floors, walls, high‑traffic surfaces, toilets, stalls, sinks, tables, fountains, gym, and locker rooms
  • Wash windows and mirrors
  • Replenish supplies (tissues, paper towels, soap, etc.)
  • Assist with the daily operation of the schools
  • Prepare school grounds for staff and students
  • Set up for special events and activities; keep equipment and custodial facilities clean, neat, and in good repair
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed
  • Groundskeeping and landscaping to maintain school grounds in a safe and attractive condition
  • Shovel, snow‑blow, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as needed
  • Appropriately assist in emergency situations
  • Cooperatively work with fellow custodians, staff, students, parents, principals, guests, and other district employees
  • Be friendly and helpful to visitors
  • Be available for emergency calls and work as needed
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities, and events
  • Attend in‑service training (e.g., blood‑borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.)
  • Maintain daily attendance and punctuality
  • Help respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms) to resolve issues and maintain a functional environment
  • Inspect school district facilities to ensure suitability for safe operations, and report any necessary repairs
  • Lift up to 35 pounds unassisted and work at heights up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding
  • May be required to maintain the pool and pool area and maintain a pool operators certification
  • May be assigned grounds maintenance including athletic fields
  • Secure school district facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and liability
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, Principal, and/or Director of Maintenance (or designee)

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Massachusetts Civil Service eligibility

Minimum Qualifications to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Physical Requirements: Able to operate various equipment (mop, buffer, snow blower, shovel, etc.), operate a motor vehicle, exert up to 35 pounds of force, walk, stand, kneel, and squat significantly
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal to convey or exchange information; give instructions to staff, students, parents, and visitors
  • Language Ability: Read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc.
  • Intelligence: Apply logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Verbal Aptitude: Communicate effectively and efficiently; deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for proper length, width, and shape
  • Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using equipment
  • Manual Dexterity: Handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools; have minimal eye/hand/foot coordination
  • Interpersonal: Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions, adapt to performing under stress, and confront emergency situations
  • Physical Communication: Talk and hear; communicate via telephone or radio
