The Public Works Department plays a key role in maintaining and improving the City's infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors. The department oversees streets, traffic systems, landscaping, lighting, water, sewer, and storm drains, as well as City-owned facilities and vehicle fleets. Public Works also provides engineering, environmental compliance, and inspection services, manages capital improvement projects and recycling programs, and administers the City's solid waste franchise.

What You'll Do

As our new Streets Maintenance Worker, you will:

  • Repair and replace concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and other concrete structures; repair and maintain City streets, alleys, and public right-of-way.
  • Operate tools and equipment such as rollers, dump trucks, backhoes, jack hammers, air compressors, and tractors; set up traffic control and safety zones.
  • Install and maintain street signs and street markings using equipment and tools such as a pneumatic drill, banding equipment, rivets, and paint sprayer.
  • Respond to debris in the roadway, perform weed abatement, and complete minor fence repair.
What We're Looking For

Someone who:

  • Has knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances, techniques for street repair, asphalt patching, concrete mixing, traffic control, and safety.
  • Can properly operate loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, string trimmers, blowers, herbicide spray, and spray rig.
  • Is excited by challenges, loves to learn, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Education:

    Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training in construction and maintenance work.
  • Experience:

    Three (3) years of relevant maintenance experience.
  • Licenses and Certifications (For part-time Streets Maintenance Worker only):
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
    • Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of employment, a valid CPR/First Aid Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Mobility to work in the field and to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and visit various community sites.
  • Vision to inspect and operate equipment.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
