Position: Package Testing Engineer II

Overview

Package Testing Engineer II reports to the Associate Director of Design and is responsible for evaluating, developing, testing, and qualifying packaging systems for PCI’s clients. The role supports Package Testing Services, commercial sales efforts, and the successful commercialization of awarded packaging projects. It also involves package design and onsite performance testing, leading workflows and reliability of the onsite Package Testing Lab, and managing projects with external partners.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate plans and implementation of packaging designs to meet regulatory/industry guidelines.
  • Lead and manage package testing projects with internal and external laboratories.
  • Collaborate with functional teams and stakeholders such as package designers, process/tooling engineers, project management, purchasing, sales, and others to support commercialization of new packaging systems and improvements to existing formats.
  • Quote testing services opportunities and maintain metrics tracking.
  • Prepare samples and conduct package performance feasibility studies in the onsite prototyping and testing laboratory.
  • Provide packaging engineering consultation services to PCI clients.
  • Analyze and interpret test results and perform root cause analysis as necessary.
  • Maintain and track digital assets related to packaging design, testing standards, and regulations.
  • Provide direction and mentorship to in‑house interns and other testing engineers.
  • Support internal corporate and marketing activities as needed.
  • Adhere to all PCI cGMP and GCP policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Attend work consistently as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or related discipline with at least 2+ years of related industry experience or training.
  • Knowledge of packaging development process within the life sciences industry, preferably pharmaceutical and biotech.
  • Proficiency in industry guidelines and standards such as USP, ASTM, ISTA, ISO, CPSC, and ASTM.
  • Understanding of Formative/Summative Human Factors Validation testing and Child Resistance/Adult Friendly packaging qualifications ISO/EN, CPSC, ASTM.
  • High professional proficiency in industry guidelines and standards.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in a cross‑functional environment.
  • Advanced technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Self‑driven, innovative mindset.
  • Understanding of cGMP and GLP processes/standards (21 CFR Part 211).
  • Basic computer skills and ability to operate common computer programs.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Full professional proficiency in written, read, and spoken English.
  • High reasoning ability and problem‑solving skills.
  • High standard of report writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to follow written instructions and respond to management direction.
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.
  • Ability to display original thinking and creativity.
  • Knowledge of package design and proficiency in Solidworks, ArtiosCAD, TOPS, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop.
  • Hands‑on prototyping experience.
  • Experience with in contract development and manufacturing organization.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes for paperboard, injection molded, thermoform, and coldform package materials.
  • Certification as Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) and/or Certified Packaging Lab Professional (CPLP) is preferred.
Salary & Benefits

Base salary range: $77,600 – $90,000, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus. PCI offers a competitive benefits package that includes paid time off, health insurance coverage (including dental and vision), flexible spending account, and 401(k).
