Summary
This position is located within the Environmental Management Service of the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and is under the direct supervision of the Supervisor or designee. The role performs janitorial and custodial services in patient and non‑patient care areas. It is an open‑continuous announcement; applicants will be referred to the Hiring Manager as needed on a weekly basis or until all positions are filled.
The first cut‑off date is 5/13/2026.
Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality is required. Evidence demonstrating knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on the resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Qualification will be first evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element (typically the first question in the online questionnaire). Those who meet the minimal requirement are considered for further rating; otherwise, they are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps, other community organizations).
Volunteer experience that demonstrates critical competencies will receive credit. A full year of work is considered 35–40 hours per week. Part‑time experience is credited based on actual time spent. Applicants requesting credit for such experience must indicate the nature of duties, responsibilities, and hours per week for each position.

Environmental Service Technician/PD99909S
- Execute a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non‑patient care areas.
- May be assigned to any tour and may be required to work in various designated areas during any tour of duty.
- Work independently with general supervision or with a team, responsible for the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area throughout the medical facility.
- Perform floor maintenance, including stripping, waxing, and scrubbing various floor types.
- Cleans doors, door frames, baseboards, corners, edges, and stairwells.
- Tasks include sweeping, dust mopping, damp and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming, carpet and runner extraction, spot cleaning, and high and low dusting.
- Utilize pressure washers and heavy industrial powered and battery‑operated equipment as needed.
- Adjust, clean, and perform minor maintenance on equipment and change attachments for proper use.
- Empty trash and wastebaskets, replace liners.
- Transport general refuse, regulated medical waste, and recycling to central collection areas.
- Cleans restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring they meet acceptable standards (clean, disinfect, deodorize lavatories, showers, bathtubs, urinals, toilets).
- Clean mirrors, sinks, and water fountains.
- Wash and polish light and toilet fixtures.
- Replenish supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in all dispenser areas.
- Move and arrange furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, etc., in the assigned area to accomplish cleaning tasks.
- Provide bed‑making services in patient care areas and OD rooms, including cleaning mattresses, springs, bed frames, bedside stands, over‑bed lights, blood pressure cuffs, and bed tables.
- Remove bags of soiled textiles from patient rooms and transport them to the designated soiled room in each ward area.
- Load and unload clean textiles from bulk carts.
- Restock clean textile closets, cabinets, shelves, carts, and participate in inventory management activities.
- Cleans patient‑care ice machines in nourishment kitchen areas.
- Cleans stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets, counters, elevators in lobbies, wards, diet kitchens, and nurse utility rooms, and cleans water fountains.
- Provide interim cleaning of windows and window ledges from the inside, clean glass doors and other glass surfaces, replace curtains, and clean blinds.
