Lead Building Attendant

The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a cluster of seven independent colleges. TCCS serves about 9,000 students and nearly 3,600 faculty and staff with exceptional shared services and operates throughout the campus in Claremont, California.

About the Position

The Lead Building Attendant maintains clean, sanitary, and safe facilities for students, staff, and the public. The role focuses on preventing property damage and liability, overseeing assigned building attendants, and supporting daily operations with professional custodial and maintenance practices.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain attractive, sanitary, and safe facilities for students, staff, and guests.
  • Serve as lead for other Building Attendants, providing direction, work coordination, scheduling, training, and monitoring progress to maximize workforce efficiency.
  • Maintain established standards of performance and conduct daily inspections of custodial zone areas.
  • Analyze workflow with the Custodial Supervisor, provide work schedule recommendations, create reports, and oversee day‑to‑day operations.
  • Assume supervisory responsibilities during the Custodial Supervisor’s absence.
  • Clean assigned spaces and maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Inspect TCCS facilities to ensure suitability for safe operations and identify necessary repairs.
  • Apply special finish to wood floors to preserve surfaces.
  • Participate in meetings as assigned to assist and convey information to team members.
  • Distribute supplies to all TCCS buildings, notify the Supervisor of stock levels, and request replenishment.
  • Keep supply storage rooms organized and track usage trends.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations, including opening gates, building access doors, and disarming security systems.
  • Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns.
  • Secure facilities and grounds to avoid or minimize potential damage, loss, or liability.
  • Train assigned personnel on cleaning methods, safety, and equipment usage, and demonstrate adherence to safety policies.
  • Assist other personnel in completing their work activities.
  • Attend in‑service or online training such as blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, and first aid.
  • Be responsible for all event setups for TCCS.
Qualifications Education

A high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Four to five years of relevant supervisory experience, including at least one year of custodial or janitorial assignments in an educational environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In‑depth knowledge of proper janitorial and custodial techniques.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively without continuous supervision.
  • Availability for overtime work and on‑call duties; compliance with all applicable safety rules and procedures.
  • Professional communication skills with a diverse population.
  • Ability to work productively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing quality customer service.
  • Presentation of a neat and professional appearance that reflects favorably on CFS and TCCS.
  • Energy and stamina to perform the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, climb ladders up to 3 feet, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform tasks in uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to work indoors and occasionally outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
Other

A valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to TCCS’s automobile liability insurance provider. A post‑offer, pre‑employment physical exam showing the applicant’s ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of experience providing oversight or supervision of staff in a similar industry.
Required Work Hours

The regular hours for this full‑time position are an evening shift from 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with a half‑hour meal break.
