Low Voltage Shop Supervisor

Under general supervision, the Low Voltage Shop Supervisor leads, manages, and coordinates the daily operations, activities, and staff of the Low Voltage shop of Central Facilities Services (CFS). Responsibilities include the installation, maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of low and medium voltage electrical systems including fire alarm, intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance, emergency phones, telecommunications infrastructure, and associated network-connected devices.

The incumbent manages projects and contractors and provides leadership and mentoring to staff in support of the operational needs of The Claremont Colleges Services.

Essential Functions

The following are the essential duties and responsibilities the incumbent must be able to perform.

  • Assigns, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates work of employees in the Low Voltage Shop.
  • Analyzes and resolves work-related problems.
  • Manages, evaluates, and maintains the campus Central Alarm System components, including but not limited to:
    Fire Alarm, Intrusion Alarm, Panic Alarm systems.
  • Manages, evaluates, maintains, and supports campus electronic access control, video surveillance, emergency phones, telecommunications infrastructure, and associated network connected devices.
  • Collaborates with the Building Automation Systems team to support network infrastructure, field devices, communications pathways, and integration of BAS-related systems.
  • Verify and approve time and attendance through time tracking portal.
  • Verify and approve daily technician billing data.
  • Prepares labor and material estimates for work orders and other trade requests and initiates purchase orders for materials/services needed.
  • Complete work orders and associated paperwork. Ensures accurate documentation of work performed, preventive maintenance activities, asset information, and project records within the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Coordinate with the IT Department regarding network connectivity, cybersecurity requirements, server infrastructure, network maintenance, and the installation and integration of campus low-voltage systems.
  • Test and repair emergency phones and oversee TELCO manholes and dig alert notifications.
  • Maintains an inventory of tools and materials in the shop, and requisitions materials as needed.
  • Recommends ways to improve work methods and quality, and to insure efficiency of equipment and shop performance.
  • Perform trade duties and responsibilities as needed. Assignments may require working in difficult positions such as kneeling, bending, and reaching, as well as from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; heavy lifting may be required.
  • Coordinates and oversees the activities of outside contractors, consultants, vendors, and service providers performing work related to low-voltage systems.
  • Plan and inspect installation of equipment according to blueprints, schematic drawings, and sketches.
  • Review plans / specifications and provide recommendations for design / construction / changes.
  • Inspects work in progress for conformity to specifications and codes. Provide "as built" information/data for plans/drawings.
  • Subject to the approval of the Director of Central Facilities Services, screen, select, evaluate, and make recommendation for promotions, transfers, discharges, and disciplinary actions for shop employees.
  • Provide training in CFS procedures and applicable TCCS policies.
  • Provide ongoing coaching that is balanced, constructive, and timely and contributes to a work environment of open communications, ownership of duties, and trust.
  • Clearly communicate job requirements and expectations. Provide training and resources to support the performance of work duties.
  • Address performance issues in a timely manner with appropriate follow up and documentation. Collaborate with the VP and Human Resources as needed.
  • Investigate and prepare initial documentation for work-related performance issues and employee concerns.
  • Evaluates workload on a continuing basis and makes recommendations for hiring or layoff when required.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, local, fire, electrical, and building codes, including NFPA, and other applicable standards.
  • Evaluates training needs and ensures staff maintain required certifications, licenses, and technical competencies associated with assigned systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
