Transit Equipment Maintenance Assistant

general statement of job

this is the first of five levels in the equipment maintenance series. Incumbents perform routine maintenance on vehicles. Responsibilities may include filling fluids such as fuel, oil, transmission fluid and coolant; cleaning the interior and exterior of vehicles; changing or dumping vaults; moving vehicles for maintenance and cleaning; and maintaining a clean work environment.

essential functions:

• performs preventive and routine maintenance to equipment and/or vehicles, which may include checking tire wear and pressure, checking fluid levels, adding fluids, replacing filters, replacing oil, and/or performing related activities.
• cleans vehicle interiors and exteriors; maintains a clean work environment.
• puts vehicles on hold when major problems are found that affect the safety and smooth operation of the vehicle.
• assists with maintaining the security of assigned area, which includes ensuring all keys are removed from vehicles, ensuring gates are locked and buildings are secure before leaving the premises.
• maintains records of maintenance and repair activities.
• performs janitorial duties at the transit center, which includes cleaning bathrooms and taking out trash.
• performs other related work as required.

education and experience

• high school graduate or equivalent; or ged
• an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.

license and certifications

• possession of a valid class b commercial driver’s license issued by the state of tennessee.
• forklift certification

physical requirements

the work is very heavy work which requires exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• balancing: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• climbing: ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
• crawling: moving about on hands, knees, hands, and feet.
• crouching: bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
• feeling: perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
• fingering: picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
• grasping: applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
