Position: Utilities Plant Operator - Water Treatment (R.W. Neilson Water Treatment Plant)

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting mechanics in maintaining water treatment operations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Operator.

Qualification Requirements

  • Assists senior plant operator with routine technical and responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plant and equipment.
  • Makes regular tours of plant to check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters and other equipment for proper functioning.
  • Records readings from meters and instruments; performs specific laboratory tests.
  • Reports defects to maintenance personnel.
  • Substitutes for senior operator in his/her absence.
  • Monitors water plant operations and distribution via SCADA.
  • Adjusts chemical dosages under the direction of the senior operator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; general knowledge of water plant drawings and maps; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages;

ability to compute flows, volumes, weights from data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms; frequently requires repetitive motions; occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; requires tactile, hearing among others; requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; visual inspection involving small defects and or small parts;

use of measuring devices; operating machines, motor vehicles or equipment; exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, explosives, self‑contained breathing apparatus, blood borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, electrical shock, vibration; work generally in a loud noise location.

Upon Hire
  • Overtime is required and will supplement base salary.
  • Ability to pass a validated job assessment skills test which will include math (minimum passing score 70%).
  • Valid driver's license.
Within a Reasonable Timeframe
  • Pass NC State B Surface Certification as per the City's operator policy.
