Maintenance Assistant-Buildings & Grounds
Primary purpose: The Skilled Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Assistant will assist the Director of Buildings & Grounds in all aspects of maintenance of our historic University Circle buildings and campus.
The schedule for this Full Time, Benefits Eligible role is Tuesday - Thursday, 12:30 pm-9 pm, Friday 12:30 pm
-8:30 pm, Saturday 8 am - 5 pm. Occasional Sundays.
Essential duties, skills needed and responsibilities:
Must have 2 or more years of hands‑on building repair/maintenance experience using skills as described below.
Building maintenance:
- Carpentry skills necessary to repair impacts of wear and tear due to school use, such as: drywall/plaster repairs, door maintenance and repairs, and other basic woodworking and painting.
- HVAC maintenance on historic buildings, requiring a working understanding of and experience working with boiler systems, and other systems.
- Basic electrical repair and troubleshooting, such as bulb and ballast replacement.
- Basic plumbing repair and troubleshooting, such as addressing urgent repairs of sinks and toilets as well as leaks.
- Experienced in opening and closing/securing facilities, operating security systems and respond to emergencies as needed per policies and procedures.
- Experience plus a willingness to learn new mechanical skills needed to maintain our facilities and grounds.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
School/Building
Activities:
- Assisting with daily event set ups and teardowns, including moving chairs, tables and risers for musical events, lessons, and ensemble events in our performance spaces.
- Housekeeping, carpet shampooing, detailed cleaning. Assist with spill/accident clean‑ups, such as in preschool setting.
Grounds:
- Significant time spent outdoors, as required for the seasons.
- Lawn maintenance and landscaping, including operating commercial lawn equipment and tools.
- Snow and ice removal and salting, leaf removal, etc. including commercial equipment.
Physical requirements and Focus/Communications Requirements:
- Year‑round outdoor work: exposure to heat and cold in the Cleveland environment as the seasons vary, including being outside in varied weather, with appropriate clothing for the conditions.
- Ability to kneel, bend, push/pull, stand and walk throughout the workday, and work in close and/or awkward spaces while doing building repairs or maintenance.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs., and move heavier items with mechanical assistance (such as using carts or dollys, or moving wheeled furniture and instruments, such as moving pianos which are on wheels within or between rooms).
- Ability to work efficiently and independently on assignments.
- Ability to follow spoken and written work and safety instructions and directions.
- Ability to hear, speak, read and write in English.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential.
- Basic computer use and understanding such as receiving and sending email using Microsoft 365/Word and viewing spreadsheets for assignments.
- Ability to work on ladders while performing maintenance and repairs, such as reaching above head.
- All other duties as assigned.
Educational requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED; prefer additional maintenance experience and education or certifications.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates/employees must demonstrate eligibility for employment through BCI, FBI, and State of Ohio background checks to be approved to work in a Licensed Ohio Early Child care facility, free of particular criminal convictions as dictated by regulations. Successful applicants will need to create an OCCRRA Account with ODJFS – Ohio Department of Jobs and Family, as well as obtain a signed medical release form and vaccination verification attesting that candidate/employee is physically fit to work in an early childhood setting, at applicant's expense, prior to beginning work.
