Maintenance Technician / Mechanic

Primary PurposeAt our Cleveland Service Center site in Cleveland, Ohio, we re-manufacture alternators for EVO, HDL, and FDL locomotives. The center supplies alternators to locomotive manufacturing sites and repair points worldwide. The site focuses on safe, efficient processes while driving out costs. The Machinist A is responsible for machining, welding, dismantling, testing, inspecting, and repairing components across multiple product lines. Employees participate in 5 S and lean projects.
This role reports directly to the Supervisor.
Shift: 2nd shift, Monday‑Friday 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm.
Duties and Responsibilities- Lead the Machining/Buffer & Tap/Frame Head Cable Aux department.
- Communicate, direct, instruct, schedule, and assist team members.
- Perform complex machining, welding, dismantling, cleaning, testing, inspecting, and repairing of components across multiple product lines.
- Support various departments as required and report repair/build status and completion dates to the lead technical advisor.
- Assist other work leaders in developing work scope, materials, and tooling requirements.
- Drive 5 S activities and visualization implementation in the work area.
- Lead Gemba discussions for the department.
- Maintain a strong work ethic with a focus on safety awareness and accident prevention.
- Meet schedules and recommend improvements that enhance build/repair processes, quality, and product reliability.
- Successfully pass the vision acuity test.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
- At least 1 year in a manufacturing environment or equivalent experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Tow‑motor experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work unsupervised.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Clear communication of ideas and concepts.
- Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and problem‑identification skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and/or re‑qualify equipment within areas of responsibility.
- Welding & brazing certification is not required to apply, but must be obtained within six months of placement.
- Regularly talk and hear.
- Regularly see and observe small handwriting, labels, and components.
- Wear steel‑toe shoes and safety glasses.
- Remain on site during the scheduled shift to perform daily duties and responsibilities.
- Non‑temperature‑controlled environment with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
- May be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather during visits to operations.
- Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
Hourly rate: $28.13 plus a $1.25 shift differential.
