Maintenance Painter
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing maintenance painting for the City of Columbus; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
- Applies paint to wood, metal, concrete, and multiple surface materials by brush, roller, and spray gun;
- Varnishes and lacquers surfaces;
- Paints building interiors and exteriors;
- Paints floors, furniture, and office equipment;
- Mixes paint and blends colors;
- Cleans and maintains brushes and rollers; properly disposes of materials related to maintenance painting;
- Applies wallcovering;
- Prepares surfaces for application of paint; repairs and patches walls as needed;
- May operate a sandblaster, power sander, paint shaker, and other equipment;
- May keep records and coordinate supply orders;
- May perform other maintenance duties as required;
- May operate variety of non-CDL vehicles and other equipment such as a bucket/boom lift vehicle or scissor lift to perform work at heights on the interior and/or exterior of buildings and structures;
- May rig and work from ladders and scaffolding.
Two (2) years of painting experience, to include surface preparation and painting. Substitution(s):
Possession of a Certification of Completion of Apprenticeship in Painting issued by the U.S. Department of Labor or the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council for one (1) year of the required experience.
Possession of a valid driver's license.
The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE eligible list, and will replace the names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process.

The examination process will consist of a 100% computerized exam covering Oral Comprehension, Painting Practices and Materials, Safety, Reading Comprehension, and Information Ordering.
The exam is expected to be administered in August 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
