Maintenance Planner/Supervisor

Position Overview

U.S. Sugar produces sugarcane on over 200,000 acres of land in the South Florida area. The Harvesting Department is a centralized group that carries out harvesting of sugarcane across all farm areas. The Harvest Maintenance Planner/Supervisor position is a hybrid of the Harvest Planner Position and the Harvest Maintenance Supervisor position. This employee is responsible for working closely with the Harvest Maintenance Supervisor in their assigned units.

The Harvest Maintenance Planner/Supervisor will be responsible for emergency and planned maintenance work on harvest related equipment including, but not limited to harvesters, tractors, loading stations, cane wagons, power units, construction equipment, vehicles, etc. The position will on a regular basis fill in for a Harvest Maintenance Supervisor in managing a team which typically includes 10-40 hourly, union mechanics, welders, multi crafts (dual Journeyman level crafts) , and servicemen and responsible for carrying out and improving upon Reliability Excellence best practices.

General

Duties and Responsibilities Maintenance Planning
  • Reviews and screens work requests (the reviewing authority will review and approve the work request or unapproved work order)
  • Prepares detailed job plans with task specific instructions
  • Executes the planning process, including coordinating the requisition of parts, materials, tools, and documentation while meeting applicable safety requirements
  • Develops and coordinates the maintenance work schedules
  • Estimating job cost including labor, materials, and contract service requirements
  • Plans and schedules Preventive (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) and, in partnership with the Reliability Manager, identifies equipment to include in the PM/PdM program
  • Closes work orders to ensure accuracy of data
  • Manages backlog work through effective work prioritization
  • Provides analysis and reporting of maintenance performance results including leading and lagging metrics
Maintenance Supervising
  • Works with Supervisors and other Planners to direct technicians in the performance of approved maintenance work. Oversees quality, duration, cost, and thoroughness of all work under their jurisdiction.
  • Reviews and Refines Job Packages. Reviews available planned job package(s) for completeness and correctness and make any necessary adjustments. Refines and finalizes labor, materials, parts, methods and priorities.

    Advises Planners and Supervisors of changes and logic behind them.
  • Ensures job quality and efficiency by frequently checking jobs in progress . As jobs progress, the Maintenance Planner/Supervisor may spends half of his day on the floor mentoring, assisting and leading aiding his team.
  • Ensures maximum production between jobs and at breaks and shift changes. Ensures the orderly conduct of maintenance team members with respect to company policy and work rules. Makes every effort to prevent delays and follows up on interruptions. Obtains information and makes decisions about unanticipated developments in required time to complete work.
  • Makes the tactical decisions necessary to complete emergency and unscheduled work while staying as close to schedule as possible. Works with Supervisors to reassigns crew and arranges for material and equipment to accommodate unforeseen/unscheduled conditions. Tactics must often be adjusted as the day and individual jobs progress.
  • Follow up on completed work . Follow-up involves a close look at what has been done and if necessary, identifies opportunities for improvement the next time the same or similar job is performed. Part of the follow-up involves the assigned technician suggesting ways to improve either planning or job methods. Another aspect is development of a history of maintenance repairs for individual equipment.

    This is very beneficial in identifying repetitive problems, in development of corrective programs and for budget preparation.
  • The Maintenance Planner/Supervisor is responsible for developing technician craft skills. This requires knowledge of the skills required to properly maintain the processes and the related skill deficits of all personnel performing some aspect of the maintenance program.
