As a Lead I (Elementary School Custodian), you play a key leadership role in ensuring the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and custodial functions of your assigned site are executed at a high level.

This position offers the opportunity to lead and support a team, coordinate building operations, and serve as a critical partner to school leadership. You will apply your expertise to ensure facilities are well-maintained, safe, and ready to support teaching and learning each day. Employees in this role collaborate closely with District departments and take pride in work that has a direct and visible impact on the school environment and overall District operations.

The Lead I provides advanced operational support to ensure safe, efficient, effective, and customer-focused daily operations. This position serves as a senior resource to staff by coordinating workflow, supporting service continuity, monitoring compliance with established procedures, assisting with training, and resolving routine operational issues. The position provides day-to-day work direction, coaching, and prepares employee evaluations subject to supervisory review and final approval.

Higher-level employee conduct matters and formal personnel actions are referred to supervisory leadership. Serves as primary designee in the supervisor's absence for routine daily operations as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinates daily workflow and operational readiness for assigned work unit.
  • Provides day-to-day lead direction and assistance to staff.
  • Assists with onboarding and training of employees.
  • Monitors routine work quality, safety, and compliance.
  • Resolves routine customer and operational concerns.
  • Prepares draft employee evaluations for supervisory review and approval.
  • Documents performance concerns and refers higher-level personnel matters upward.
  • Maintains schedules, logs, and operational records.
  • Serves as designee for routine daily operations during supervisor absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of assigned department procedures, daily operations, and customer service expectations.
  • Knowledge of basic workflow coordination, safety practices, and district procedures.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and routine reporting requirements.

Skills

  • Skill in organizing daily work assignments and prioritizing tasks.
  • Skill in providing peer guidance, onboarding assistance, and routine training.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment and department-specific software.

Abilities

  • Ability to provide day-to-day lead direction in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to monitor routine work quality and compliance.
  • Ability to prepare draft employee evaluations subject to supervisory review and final approval.
  • Ability to identify issues requiring escalation to supervisory leadership.
  • Ability to serve as designee for routine daily operations in the supervisor's absence.

Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:
Three (3) years of related experience.

Preferred:
Experience as a Building Tech or Custodial Support Tech (CST) preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work is performed in and around District buildings and facilities. This position is subject to rotational assignment across District sites based on operational needs and at the discretion of the Area Custodial Supervisor, Custodial Foreman, or Facilities Operations & Maintenance Manager. The role may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

This position requires regular physical activity with periods of heavy exertion. Employees must be able to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift and lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
