Description of Job

The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a General Maintenance Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Limon Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff, and inmates; training and overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations; and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned tasks.

This position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.

Responsibilities Safety and Security
  • Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train and guide inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Enforce security procedures through work site searches, monitoring workspace environment, and inmate behavior.
  • Initiate verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically control inmates with proper restraints or use of force techniques.
  • Monitor, supervise, and escort inmates per policy; limit inmate access to restricted areas.
  • Perform inmate counts and transportation; respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes in accordance with policy; write and submit required reports.
Operations
  • Ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and cost‑effective operations of building and grounds construction, janitorial operations, repair, and maintenance.
Building Maintenance
  • Maintain facility buildings including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, remodeling, and repairs.
  • Provide instruction and training to inmates in modifying and remodeling of prison buildings constructed of various materials.
  • Train inmate workers in proper use, care, and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals, and machinery.
Grounds Maintenance
  • Maintain facility grounds including design, installation, and daily maintenance of irrigation pumps, sprinkler heads, lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches, and gates.
  • Provide instruction and training to inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance and proper use of tools.
  • Responsible for snow removal throughout the complex.
General Maintenance Coordination
  • Coordinate with other projects, supervisors, and managers to facilitate economical use of resources; assist other physical plant staff as assigned.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and materials; monitor inventory levels; implement procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss.
Supervision
  • Supervise assigned inmate work crew; set work standards per agency mission and vision.
  • Train and instruct staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment, and procedures.
  • Promote safe construction practices and proper use of PPE.
  • Assist in inmate hiring, placement, and training needs; track and calculate inmate hours and pay; create schedules and assign tasks; resolve grievances; inspect work and perform inmate evaluations.
  • Reduce inmate idleness and create real‑life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.
  • May supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors.
