The Solid Waste Department in Alexander known as the Landfill is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Technician I to join our team. This role involves mowing, weed‑eating, litter pickup, and emptying dumpsters at the convenience center. The position requires daily application of Posi‑Shell, as mandated by state regulations, to help control wind‑blown litter. Standard work schedule:
Monday through Friday 8:00AM‑5:00PM, with rotating weekend shifts (typically one weekend followed by two off).
- Perform various grounds maintenance tasks, including picking up litter, cleaning around recycling centers, and cleaning around tub grinder site and roads.
- Keep sites groomed and in well‑maintained status.
- Assist mechanics in repairs to equipment and machinery, including regular cleaning.
- Assist in loading recyclables on trucks.
- Operate motorized lawn mower, pickup truck, and landfill equipment as needed.
- Work with all solid waste programs as assigned, including Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Events.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in maintenance trades (HVAC, electric, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, or painting) or equivalent education/experience.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- SWANA Operator training required within first twelve months of hire.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Maintain a safe working environment by monitoring safety procedures and equipment.
- Use and care for tools, equipment, and materials.
- Review work throughout the process to ensure proper completion.
- Collaborate with workers and managers to solve work‑related problems.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Perform manual labor for extended periods as required.
- Deal courteously with the general public.
- Work in all types of weather.
- Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment at the landfill.
- Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with landfill work.
