Position: Parks Team Member I

Job Summary

The City of Gahanna is seeking a part‑time Parks Team Member to join our growing Parks & Recreation Team. The Parks Team Member will assist with the maintenance of parks and grounds areas as well as facilities and equipment by performing construction, janitorial, and custodial tasks involved in the maintenance of City streets, parks, and property.

This position is part‑time and typically works 28 hours per week, and may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

Starting salary: the starting salary is between the minimum and midpoint of the range. Candidates will start at the minimum of the range ($14.23 per hour) unless their skills, experience, education or other factors exceed the qualifications for the position.

Essential Job Functions
  • Works in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities, equipment, buildings and grounds; performs associated paperwork.
  • Performs street tree maintenance, turf and ball field maintenance, and landscaping and mowing activities as directed.
  • Performs janitorial and custodial tasks involved in the maintenance of City streets, parks, and property, including restroom facilities.
  • Drives a city vehicle.
  • Handles equipment safely and appropriately; uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Participates in snow removal when necessary.
  • Heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensure or Certification:
    Current and valid Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge Of

  • The principles, practices, equipment, tools, and materials used in park maintenance and construction.
  • The necessary precautions involved in the use of tools and landscaping equipment.
  • Landscaping and horticulture practices as applied to parks and grounds areas.

Skill In

  • Performing various manual tasks by operating assigned pieces of equipment.

Ability To

  • Work independently with limited direction.
  • Apply problem‑solving skills and perform critical thinking.
  • Understand and follow specific oral instructions.
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Lift heavy articles.
  • Read and write letters and numbers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Working Conditions
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and operating machinery or equipment.
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibrations, and hazards.
  • The worker may be called to work 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
  • The worker will be required to follow all safety policies and procedures and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Part‑time and intermittent employees may be eligible to participate in the Ohio Public Employment Retirement System. Employees scheduled for more than twenty hours per week may be eligible for paid time off and life insurance. Benefits are subject to change based on salary ordinance changes.
