Hourly rate: $23.92–$29.69 per hour plus a $1.50 per hour 2nd shift differential.

Description:

The building service employee has a general knowledge of cleaning materials and methods and their proper use. Duties include cleaning all aspects of a school building, operating and maintaining equipment, and interacting positively with students, staff, colleagues, and community members. The building services worker should have a basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry to ensure appropriate work orders for repairs are generated.

The worker must understand and follow oral and written instructions, including labels on cleaning supplies and equipment. Computer skills may also be required. The worker must follow all applicable safety regulations and school procedures and perform preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment.

Major Responsibilities
  • Cleans assigned areas using cleaning products, hand tools, floor buffers, shampooers, and vacuum cleaners. Performs scheduled duties such as sweeping floors and stairways, washing, waxing, polishing, cleaning and dusting furniture, emptying waste containers, including recycling bins, and cleaning and restocking restrooms. Washes walls, woodwork, furniture, floors, and metalwork. Sweeps walkways, steps, and removes litter from grounds. Works on heavy cleanups and improvement projects during school vacations.

    Participates in the rotation for weekend building checks.
  • Uses proper sanitary precautions when handling trash, cleaning solvents, and other potential bio-hazards.
  • Performs routine building maintenance activities such as checking boilers, changing unit ventilator filters, replacing light bulbs, clearing snow and ice from stairs and walkways, fixing broken furniture, replacing ceiling tiles, and performing other minor repairs.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and small tools for proper operating conditions.
  • Inspects assigned area and identifies maintenance needs and safety hazards, and reports them to the Building Services Supervisor.
  • Ensures that duties are performed in accordance with applicable safety regulations and school procedures.
  • Provides basic information to the public regarding locations and events in the building.
  • Moves and sets up furniture for sports, meetings, and other functions; arranges and cleans facilities after meetings. Assists with special activities that occur during the shift.
  • Receives deliveries such as furniture, paper, and other supplies, assembles furniture, and delivers supplies throughout the building.
  • Receives and stores cleaning solvents and related janitorial supplies in appropriate containers and storage environments.
  • Calls or pages the building services supervisor in the event that something occurs during his/her shift that requires the supervisor's attention. If the building supervisor cannot be reached, the building service worker will page the building principal and the facilities manager to communicate the situation.
  • Provides routine security of the facility, checks that windows and doors are locked, and sets security alarm when leaving the facility.
  • Must be available to respond to after‑hour emergencies.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
  • All other duties as assigned.
