Institutional Services Supervisor (Internal Hire)

Position Summary

The Institutional Services Supervisor is directly responsible for the supervision of two custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the Thomas

C. Courtway Student Recreation Center (T-Rec). The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Train new custodians in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically‑powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals.
  • Assist in personnel duties: interview, recommend for hire/termination, train, assign and review work, counsel, and evaluate performance of incumbents.
  • Schedule and supervise the collection and cleaning of soiled articles from units, inspect cleaned articles, and direct re‑cleaning/mending when necessary.
  • Monitor staff and conduct inspections of building facilities to determine custodial and/or maintenance needs.
  • Establish standards and procedures for custodial staff work.
  • Conduct orientation training and in‑service training to explain policies, work procedures, equipment use and maintenance.
  • Inventory stock to ensure supplies and equipment are available in adequate amounts.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports on cleaning and minor maintenance activities.
  • Secure all doors throughout the facility at the beginning and during the shift after all student workers and members leave, at closing.
  • Remove/dump trash from waste baskets throughout the HPER, sanitize and re‑line trash cans throughout all areas/offices.
  • Clean and sanitize locker rooms, showers, bathrooms, vanities, lockers.
  • Restock all bathrooms with supplies (toilet tissue, soap, paper towels).
  • Clean specific areas requiring special cleaning methods using specific cleansers, sterilizing equipment, and/or disposing of contaminated wastes.
  • Sweep/mop floors, vacuum rugs daily; clean baseboards, furniture and other surfaces.
  • Scrub and buff floors as needed or scheduled.
  • Clean walls, windows, window sills, stairways, and entry as needed.
  • Assist in cleaning after events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of custodial and maintenance practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in custodial and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of commercial laundry equipment.
  • Ability to maintain adequate supplies and inventory records.
  • Ability to prepare written documents.
  • Ability to conduct inspections to determine compliance with standards.
  • Ability to supervise staff of subordinate supervisors, custodial workers and semi‑skilled maintenance repairmen.

Qualifications
  • Formal education equivalent of a high school diploma plus two years of vocational training and/or experience in housekeeping.
