Public Works Maintenance Worker I
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I performs technical and manual labor tasks primarily associated with the paving of street, sidewalk, and alley infrastructure and stormwater/drainage repairs within the city. Regularly interacts with citizens as a first responder. This employee performs duties and tasks that require a high degree of physical activity and effort and is exposed to a variety of extreme weather and working conditions.
This position does not include any supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
Regular attendance is an essential job function and employment duties are routinely performed in 10‑hour shifts Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, with additional hours as needed on call.
Pay PlanThis opportunity is non‑exempt and on Pay Grade #4. The full Pay Grade Range is shown for growth and development opportunities within the grade. Salary determination is supported by budget availability and qualifications of the candidate to maintain internal equity.
- Min $18.26 ($37,972)
- Mid $22.36 ($46,507)
- Max $26.46 ($55,041)
- High School Diploma/GED
- No experience required; 6‑12 months’ experience preferred.
- Valid State of Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record
- Ability to obtain a Class D Water Operator or Wastewater Collections I License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within 6 months of employment.
- Knowledge of mechanics and basic hand tools is required.
- Ability to work closely with others as part of a team responsible for providing public service to the City and its citizens.
- Ability to perform tedious and exacting work as well as multiple tasks simultaneously in dangerous, noisy, and distracting environments under time pressures.
- Ability to perform many physically demanding tasks, which involve a high degree of concern for personal safety and the safety of coworkers, citizens, and other individuals.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with coworkers and members of the general public using the English language verbally on a daily basis is essential.
- Ability to take and follow directions.
