Overview

GENERAL

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Commercial Superintendent, the Solid Waste Lead Laborer leads and participates in the delivery of solid waste containers, assist in collections, disposal, cleaning of containers, facility maintenance and other tasks. This position provides on-site leadership, ensures safe work practices, and maintains efficient service delivery to city residents.

Supervision

Receives direct supervision from the Superintendent Commercial Solid Waste - Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate solid waste laborers in the delivery of solid waste containers, assist in collections, disposal, cleaning of containers, facility maintenance and other tasks.
  • Perform waste collection, site maintenance, and material handling operations when needed.
  • Operate equipment such as loaders, compactors, mowers, tractors and other Non-CDL equipment/vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.
  • Assist superintendent with scheduling, workload distribution, and crew coverage.
  • Train staff on equipment operation, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor facility conditions and report operational or environmental concerns.
  • Interact with the public, contractors, and haulers in a professional manner.
  • Maintain operational records and assist with inspections or audits.
  • The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.
  • Adherence to attendance policies is a condition of employment.
  • Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided.
  • Must be able to follow directions.
  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.
Peripheral Duties
  • May serve as a member of various employee committees.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.
  • Preferred 3+ years of solid waste, or transfer station experience.
  • Preferred six (6) months related experience in janitorial/custodial and facility maintenance useful.
  • Valid State Driver's License or able to get one by date of hire.

Selection Guidelines

Tools and Equipment Used

Articulated loader, backhoe, yard mule, container handler, forklift, utility trailers, pickup truck, push and riding lawnmowers, hand/power tools, and tire changing equipment.

Prolonged work in tiring or uncomfortable positions; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and stretching; prolonged standing on hard surfaces; good eye, hand, foot coordination in the manipulation of levers, pedals, etc., of motorized vehicles and light equipment.
