Job Title

Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking an equity‑minded individual to fill the Custodian role within the Maintenance and Operations Department. This is a permanent, general‑funded, full‑time, 12‑month classified position.

Work Hours:

Monday–Thursday 9:30 pm–6:00 am and Friday 3:00 pm–11:30 pm, with occasional extended hours and/or weekends as needed.

Salary

EE‑110 + 7.5% graveyard differential.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect restrooms, locker rooms, hallways, stairways, and other public areas.
  • Wipe, sweep, mop hard floors and baseboards; vacuum and spot‑clean carpets.
  • Perform scheduled cleaning of classrooms, laboratories, conferences, and office areas.
  • Maintain safe walkways and grounds; clear litter; empty outdoor trash.
  • Move furniture and equipment, assist with assembly and disassembly as directed.
  • Set up and dismantle seating and equipment for events.
  • Participate in major cleaning projects such as carpet cleaning, floor stripping, and refinishing.
  • Secure internal and external doors and ensure windows and lights are locked and off.
  • Elevate work orders, communicate maintenance needs to supervisors, and document activities.
  • Check and record emergency eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, first‑aid kits, and emergency phones.
  • Inspect equipment, perform minor repairs, and arrange complex repairs.
  • Carry out routine minor maintenance of fixtures (plumbing, electrical, dispensing units, etc.).
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report hazards.
  • Label cleaning containers, follow MSDS instructions for custodial products.
  • Order and maintain custodial supplies within budget limits.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned (subject to district policies).
Knowledge & Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of custodial methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of college schedules, routines, and events.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of work hazards and safe techniques, including lifting.
  • Basic chemical safety principles.
  • Reading and writing proficiency to understand instructions and fill forms.
  • Human relations skill, courtesy, and collaboration.
Abilities
  • Perform essential responsibilities and functions.
  • Observe safety precautions and procedures.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Determine when to refer more complex tasks to supervisor.
  • Follow oral and written directions; work independently and collaboratively.
  • Apply district policies and procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Work various shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Obtain Hazardous Materials Awareness training.
  • Obtain First Aid and CPR card within reasonable time.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of prior custodial experience.
Licenses & Other Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse student backgrounds required.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. No visa sponsorship at this time.
