3rd Shift Custodial Lead

The Custodial Lead is a working Lead responsible for the day‑to‑day assignments of a large team of custodians, ensuring efficient and effective service standards are delivered within the College. This role plays a key part in maintaining campus buildings and the environment to the highest possible standards, ensuring a safe, secure, clean, and aesthetically pleasant physical setting.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, schedule, and coordinate day‑to‑day priorities; assign custodian staff activities.
  • Assume subordinate assignments as necessary.
  • Perform regular physical inspections of buildings and grounds.
  • Coordinate snow and ice removal and report on progress.
  • Provide training for custodial personnel.
  • Identify staff opportunities and keep the Associate Director informed.
  • Prepare requests for purchases of materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain records of equipment and supplies to ensure compliance with labeling and the Right to Know Act.
  • Coordinate set‑ups for various College and/or Community events and functions.
  • Oversee maintenance of college equipment.
  • Maintain contact with vendors to ensure timely response times in emergency situations.
  • Be on call to handle problems, vandalism, special events, and other after‑hours calls to maintain campus operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director.
Education Requirements
  • Associate’s Degree required, or high school degree with equivalent combination of appropriate custodial, property management experience or proven supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Certification in Rutgers University’s Educational Facilities Management, IFMA Facilities Management, or obtain certification within three years.
Experience
  • Five (5) years’ experience in physical plant or building facilities operations.
  • Two (2) years’ supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning systems and safety standards.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English;
    Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
Competencies and Skills
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Must submit to pre‑employment drug screening and background check.
  • Working knowledge of negotiated labor relations.
  • Strong communication skills, including timely feedback on personnel performance.
  • Working knowledge of facilities management computer systems and Windows applications.
  • Ability to interact with a broad spectrum of constituents in a college setting.
  • Experience in safety, inventory control, and selection of materials.
  • Required to take AMA training courses.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Performed primarily in an interior/residential work environment, with activities scheduled in and outside, potentially exposed to extreme temperatures.
  • Exposed to dirt, disagreeable odors, and possible skin irritations from cleaning chemicals.
  • Some physical effort required; occasional lifting/moving of up to 25–50 pounds, work from ladders, and heavy equipment handling.
  • Some travel required.
Compensation

Salary: $48,000 per year.

Benefits

Comprehensive benefits package for full‑time faculty and staff, including medical, dental, and vision; twenty vacation days; ten paid holidays; and a ten‑week summer work schedule with college closure on Fridays. Additional benefits include gym privileges, tuition remission for college courses, and tuition reimbursement for an approved degree program.

Employment Conditions

Full‑time. Flexible schedule may involve evenings, weekends, and extended hours; on‑call for special events, vandalism, or after‑hours calls. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on‑ and off‑campus sites. Primary residency in New Jersey required within one year of appointment unless exempt.
