CDPL is looking for responsible, energetic people to join us in two new part‑time Custodian positions. The persons in these positions will assist to maintain a clean, comfortable and safe environment for visitors and staff by performing general custodial maintenance in the buildings of the library and the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County.
Education & ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent and prior custodial experience are required. Basic computer skills, including email, are preferred.
Schedule20–25 hours per week. Daytime, evening, and weekend hours as necessary to accommodate service needs.

The Custodian assists in maintaining a clean, comfortable and safe environment for library patrons, museum visitors, volunteers, and staff by performing general custodial maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintains a clean environment
- Establishes with the Assistant Director a schedule of routine janitorial and maintenance work
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the building and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
- Performs routine custodial duties including vacuuming, dusting, mopping tile and vinyl floors, cleaning and stocking bathrooms, dusting bookshelves, cleaning restrooms and kitchen areas, cleaning high points of contact and interior side of windows
- Assists to safely clean accidents involving bodily fluids
- Maintains a comfortable environment
- Empties trash receptacles in public and staff areas, bags trash for proper disposal, and disposes trash into dumpsters
- Gathers and transports recyclables to recycling sites
- Assists staff in the arrangement of furniture, shelving, and equipment; on special decorating projects; and to set up tables and chairs for special events as needed and available
- Maintains a safe environment
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Assists in keeping sidewalks cleared of snow
- Assists in keeping library grounds clear of trash
- Assists to maintain SDS records
- Evening custodian may serve a security function, helping to secure the building at the end of the evening shift
- Performs minor maintenance
- Ensures that cleaning and maintenance equipment is kept in good repair
- Performs light maintenance, such as changing light bulbs or batteries, cleaning air returns
- Assembles/erects equipment, shelving, and furnishings purchased by the library or museum when necessary
- Performs other tasks to assist with the smooth running of the department
- Reports to Assistant Director any items in need of special care or maintenance by qualified personnel, above and beyond that which is normal care by the custodian
- Reports to Assistant Director anything observed which may present a hazard resulting in potential injury or damage
- Assists to order and maintain inventory of cleaning and janitorial equipment and supplies
- Assists to transport deliveries to the appropriate department or area
- Observes and implements Library Board policies and procedures
- Attends meetings as required
- Performs other related duties as assigned

- Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the use of equipment and supplies necessary to clean and maintain a building
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral communications and instructions
