Position SummaryThe Library Circulation Assistant provides friendly and efficient customer service to library patrons while supporting the daily operations of the circulation department. This position is responsible for checking materials in and out, shelving library materials, processing library card applications, collecting payments, responding to patron inquiries, and assisting with a variety of library projects as needed. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, dependable, and committed to providing excellent public service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Check library materials in and out using the integrated library system.
- Accurately shelve books, media, and other materials according to library classification systems.
- Retrieve, organize, and maintain library materials to ensure collections are accessible and orderly.
- Process returned materials and inspect items for damage or maintenance needs.
- Issue new library cards and update patron account information.
- Collect and process payments for fines, fees, and other library services.
- Respond to patron inquiries in person and by telephone, providing information about library services, resources, policies, and programs.
- Assist patrons with locating materials and using library equipment and services.
- Prepare new books and other materials for circulation, including labeling, covering, stamping, and processing.
- Assist with departmental projects as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality of patron records and adhere to library policies and procedures.
- Support other library departments as needed to ensure efficient library operations.
- Help maintain a clean library space for patrons and staff.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn library software systems.
- Ability to handle cash and process financial transactions accurately.
- Ability to organize work, pay attention to detail, and work independently.
- Ability to interact courteously and effectively with patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
- Previous customer service, clerical, retail, or library experience.
- Familiarity with library circulation systems and procedures.
- Experience handling cash transactions and maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the library for extended periods.
- Ability to push book carts and lift or carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to shelve materials at various heights, including reaching overhead and bending to lower shelves.
This position includes 10 hours of Paid Time Off (PTO) per fiscal year. Holiday pay is also included on days when employee would be scheduled to work.
