Position: Part-Time, Seasonal Maintenance Worker

Department: Public Works

Salary: $17.85–$26.25 per hour, depending on qualifications

Supervisors: Operations Superintendent and Foreman I

The City is seeking a dependable and hardworking Part-Time Seasonal Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works team. This position provides up to 1,000 hours of work per City fiscal year, which runs from July through June.

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. However, occasional weekend work may be required based on operational needs. The position may also be required to respond to emergency call-outs.

Essential Functions
  • Performs leaf and limb removal efficiently and safely, following assigned routes and established procedures while remaining mindful of the safety and well-being of fellow crew members.
  • Responds to emergency call-outs in a timely manner and follows Public Works emergency procedures. Demonstrates dependability and sound judgment during emergency situations.
  • Follows assigned routes, instructions, and safe work practices when plowing snow and applying road chemicals. Assists other crew members with the completion of assigned snow routes as needed.
  • Performs park maintenance duties, including tree trimming and planting, and servicing restrooms and trash receptacles.
  • Operates vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment safely and only for their intended purposes.
  • Cleans, inspects, and maintains tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and Public Works practices. Properly stores tools and equipment after use.
  • Uses appropriate traffic-control and flagging techniques in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Properly uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) and promptly reports unsafe conditions involving roadways, equipment, or the Public Works facility to a supervisor.
  • Communication and Professionalism: Demonstrates a commitment to public service and represents the City in a professional and respectful manner. Builds and maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers through effective communication and teamwork. Actively listens, provides prompt assistance, treats others with dignity and respect, approaches problems constructively, and accepts responsibility for personal conduct and work product.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record required;
    Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B without air brake restrictions preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, City personnel, and members of the public.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and a positive, professional attitude that contributes to a healthy and productive work environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to gather and use information to solve problems and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle materials weighing up to 80 pounds and walk up to two miles per day.
  • Sufficient strength and manual dexterity to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, climb, and crawl as necessary to maintain equipment and facilities.
  • Previous experience operating snow-removal and lawn-care equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, as required.
