Head Custodian
Keeps the district's school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
Performs planning and coordination (scheduling) of daily custodial/maintenance tasks; delegates tasks to personnel under charge; monitors and inspects work for compliance with assignments. Monitors materials inventory and supply levels; orders new stock according to established policies; properly stores equipment, materials and supplies; coordinates custodial equipment service and/or repair as needed. Performs physically demanding tasks requiring use of heavy custodial equipment, i.e., mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
Supervises the moving and arranging furniture and equipment from one building to another; set up facilities for special events and meetings. Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas; reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to Administration. Leads custodial crew in major custodial projects, such as in seasonal facility preparations (Winter Break, Summer, Spring Break, etc.)
or floor stripping and waxing. Work with the Illinois Department of Public Health to maintain Water Quality Association Certification and perform water testing activities as instructed. Assist Administration with interview process and selection of potential employees; assure substitute custodian coverage as necessary; oversees summer workers. Conducts custodial staff meetings as directed or when needed. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervises and provides evaluative information toward the evaluation of custodians and summer workers.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Excellent people skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Flexible and a self-starter; able to multitask while also being highly detail-oriented. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to D46's mission.
