Job Description
Manage an equipment repair shop, directing the maintenance and repair of equipment used for highway maintenance, construction, and emergency operations. Schedule and direct activities of equipment repair technicians performing diagnosis, service, repair, inspection, and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment. Prioritize shop workload based on customer requirements, parts availability, and manpower, outsourcing work when necessary.
Interface with MANCON and collaborate with Integrated Supply Storeroom to ensure fleet maintenance and repair needs are met.
- Administration and Accounting:
Manage the state inspection process, prepare work orders, records, and reports, monitor and update work orders, maintain equipment and personnel records, create requisitions, and use towing and related contracts as needed. - Emergency Operations:
Prepare equipment for emergency operations and repair equipment in the shop or field. - Inventory and Procurement:
Maintain inventory of major shop tools, use private vendors for repairs, maintain pricing and quality documentation, post and log contract purchases, and keep an overhead purchases list. - Preventive Maintenance Program Oversight:
Track equipment scheduled for preventive maintenance, coordinate PMs with supervisors. - Safety and Hazard Prevention:
Review and communicate safety procedures, maintain Safety Data Sheet files, ensure compliance with hazardous material regulations and VDOT's Spill Preventive Control and Countermeasures Plan. - Scheduling and Direction of Shop Operations:
Schedule and direct shop personnel to ensure customer‑friendly operations, timely completion, minimal downtime, appropriate staffing, and cost monitoring.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Inspections, testing, and overhaul of equipment; operation of shop repair tools and cutting/welding equipment.
- Obtain and maintain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
- Operate a variety of equipment types.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Prioritize and schedule work.
- Read and comprehend service/repair manuals and testing devices.
- Research, evaluate data, and prepare records/reports.
- Substantial knowledge of maintenance, inspection, and repair of light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment.
- Understanding of federal and state environmental and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and policies.
- Cost‑efficient procurement skills.
- Computer, software, hand, and power tool proficiency, plus advanced diagnostic equipment use.
- Obtain and maintain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
- Operate various equipment types.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Research, evaluate data, and prepare/maintain records and reports.
- Extensive knowledge of general shop practices, vehicle maintenance, inspection, and repair.
- Knowledge of federal and state environmental and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and policies.
- Safety shoes required.
- Computer, hand, power, and advanced diagnostic tool skills.
- Training, experience, or education in automotive repair, equipment repair, diagnostics, or related fields.
- ASE Master Medium or Heavy Truck and Master Automobile certifications.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Experience repairing and maintaining automotive and construction equipment.
- Experience supervising fleet equipment service and repair operations and staff.
