Job Overview

The Campus Second Shift Custodian / Technician is responsible for the overall cleaning, maintenance, and general upkeep of the facilities comprising the physical plant of Allegany College of Maryland. The campus custodian functions as a member of the college staff, working cooperatively to maximize effectiveness of the delivery of services to staff and students. In addition, the campus custodian will be responsible for minor repairs and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment as needed.

Responsibilities

Sweeps and cleans floors in classrooms, offices and corridors.

Collects and properly disposes of trash, scrap and garbage; ensures proper separation of recyclable materials, hazardous waste, and general refuse. Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of disposal areas and uses appropriate protective equipment when handling waste.

Unloads and delivers supplies.

Moves furniture, office equipment and other items which might involve the lifting of heavy or bulky articles.

Maintains lavatories in clean and sanitary condition; including operating industrial floor scrubbers.

Washes and cleans windows, light fixtures, ventilators and other items.

Cleans and polishes desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and other classroom or office equipment.

Participates in snow removal program by shoveling, using snow blowers, spreading abrasives or chemicals, sweeping, or as otherwise directed.

Maintains college grounds, which includes: operating riding mowers, leaf blowers, trash removal, and shrubbery care.

Washes chalkboards in all classrooms and meeting areas.

Utilizes engraver to make nameplates for offices, desks, etc. as well as name pins for medical students.

Responds to security issues as necessary; when security is unavailable.

Participate in minor mechanical and electrical repairs as needed.

Participate in the college wide preventive maintenance program.

Respond to basic maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.

Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.

Will be on call to make emergency repairs.

May participate in painting as needed.

Although this position does not directly supervise; the full-time Campus Custodian/Tech may assign tasks to the Part-time Campus Custodians/Techs assigned to the 2nd shift.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and previous technician and custodial experience is required.
Preferred AA Degree or approved apprenticeship program.
Familiarity with floor care procedures and cleaning products in general.
Must possess some experience in industrial maintenance, and general working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and carpentry work (including knowledge of tools and their proper uses).
Ability to operate maintenance tools and equipment; ability to follow safety protocols and respond to emergencies.
Performs duties with minimal supervision, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and respond to maintenance and custodial needs independently.
Must be capable of identifying issues and initiating appropriate action without direct oversight, while maintaining communication with the Director of Physical Plant as needed.
