Position Information

The purpose of this classification is to maintain County buildings, grounds, athletic fields, equipment and other facilities relating to an assigned department/division.

Essential Functions
  • Performs general maintenance work involving athletic field maintenance, grounds maintenance, custodial maintenance and general building maintenance, which may include minor carpentry, plumbing, roofing, concrete or painting work.
  • Maintains buildings, equipment and related facilities; cleans restrooms (sweeping, mopping, disinfection); vacuums floors; inspects lights and scoreboards; wipes down score‑keeping areas; paints equipment or walls; repairs light fixtures and replaces bulbs; patches asphalt; cleans out drain pipes; picks up litter and empties trash containers; transports trash to designated receptacles.
  • Monitors inventory levels of equipment, tools, chemicals and supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement items; picks up supplies as needed.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment and tools, including utility truck, tractor, bobcat, aerator, sod cutter, tiller, field drag, mower, weeder, edger, seed spreader, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, vacuum, paint machine, pressure washer, tile saw, chainsaw, circular saw, grinder, drill, welder, shovel, rake, post hole digger, janitorial and gardening tools, hand tools, ladder, or two‑way radio.
  • Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks to keep vehicles, equipment and tools operable, such as inspecting, refueling, checking fluid levels, greasing, replacing parts, repairing tires, sharpening blades, washing equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations for efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Transports, lifts, loads and unloads equipment and materials for projects.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment and monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Prepares or completes forms, reports, correspondence, logs, maintenance records, inspection forms or other documents.
  • Receives various documents, reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains them as appropriate.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, community service workers, inmate workers, vendors, the public, outside agencies and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review status, exchange information or resolve problems.
Assignment to the Parks & Recreation Department (Additional Duties)
  • Maintains park grounds, athletic fields, recreational facilities; mows, edges, drags and grooms fields; measures, marks, lays out and paints playing fields; paints foul lines and poles; repairs pitching rubbers, home plates and bases; maintains infield areas, removes rocks, adds dirt, fills low areas; applies infield conditioner; top‑dresses turf; inspects and rakes sand around playgrounds; aerates, seeds, fertilizes and waters grounds; installs sod;

    applies herbicides and pesticides; rakes ground surfaces; removes litter and debris; repairs nets of tennis and basketball courts; installs or repairs fences; assembles and cleans bleachers, benches and picnic tables; erects or paints trash cans; installs, replaces and repairs sprinkler systems and heads; lays rock and concrete block around landscaped areas; cuts down trees/shrubs; burns tree limbs and debris; digs holes, trenches and shovels/spreads materials.
  • Monitors and inspects park facilities to identify problems that require repair, such as vandalism, inoperative lighting or broken sprinkler heads; reports issues to supervisor.
  • Assists with setup of summer camps or other parks/recreational activities.
Additional Functions

This classification is designated as a safety‑sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug‑testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.

Minimum Qualifications
