Position: Terminal Operator I

Job Overview

Job Type: Regular. Plains is an industry‑leading transportation and midstream provider specializing in transportation, storage, processing, and marketing solutions for crude oil. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas. This role is a Terminal Operator responsible for operating and maintaining pipeline facilities and terminals—including tanks, pipeline pumping stations, LACTs, and gathering facilities—to ensure safe and accurate transportation and storage of petroleum products.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain, clean, and perform general housekeeping of pipeline and terminal facilities, including painting, weed control, and equipment upkeep.
  • Monitor and document station activity, including readings, over/short documentation, and oil movement orders.
  • Conduct condition checks, report abnormal conditions, and troubleshoot equipment such as rotating equipment, valves, LACT and metering systems, and hydrocarbon drain systems.
  • Operate electrical and flare systems, instrument air systems, and truck loading/unloading equipment safely.
  • Inspect and maintain pipeline security, monitor Rights of Way (ROW), and report unauthorized activity or pipe contact.
  • Inspect tanks, pumps, valves, and associated equipment; perform routine maintenance on mixers, motors, gearboxes, and emergency generators.
  • Oversee product movements, including receipts and deliveries from pipelines, rail cars, vessels, and tank trucks, and perform tank‑to‑tank transfers.
  • Record measurement activities: enter fuel, flare, and vent volumes, reference temperatures, perform BSW tests, and verify tickets and inventories.
  • Plan and execute pigging activities, including sending and receiving pipeline pigs and restoring service.
  • Maintain communications with the Pipeline Control Center, and start‑up and shut‑down pipelines as directed.
  • Detect and respond to leaks, providing timely notifications and documentation; assist in leak repairs.
  • Perform daily and monthly balancing of systems, complete necessary logs, and maintain inspection records.
  • Support Product Quality Management through field tests, lab equipment maintenance, sample record keeping, and product analysis.
  • Respond to abnormal and emergency events, demonstrating safe work practices and reporting hazards and near‑misses.
  • Carry out other pipeline or terminal duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience preferred.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English; basic math skills required.
  • Ability to read and interpret pipeline maps, technical drawings, and schematics.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with tools and equipment such as compressors, pumps, mixers, hydrometers, centrifuges, sulfur machines, gauge lines, temperature and H2S monitors, SCBA, fire extinguishers, and scrapers.
  • Basic knowledge of product measurement, sampling procedures, and petroleum product characteristics (gravity, viscosity, flash, BS&W).
  • Basic computer skills, including Excel, Word, and Microsoft Office; ability to record data in computer‑based systems.
  • Qualification to conduct wharf operations, including marine and truck rack vapor control systems; ability to obtain a TWIC card.
  • Familiarity with PHMSA and OSHA regulations, and facility work authorization permits.
  • Outstanding safety record; completion of Haz‑Mat training and mandatory DOT operator qualifications.
  • Physical capability to work outdoors in extreme heat and cold, and to handle moderate to heavy physically demanding tasks.
  • Valid US driver’s license with a clean abstract.
  • Clearance of criminal background and satisfactory reference checks.
  • Compliance with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including pre‑employment screening.
  • Position is not eligible for employment‑based visa sponsorship; applicant must be authorized to work in the U.S. for the duration of employment.
