Cemetery Mowing Crew at City of Danville, VA summary:

Performs unskilled and semi-skilled outdoor labor for municipal public works and cemetery mowing tasks, including grass cutting, leaf and debris removal, basic groundskeeping, and support for events and emergency responses. May perform general street and utility support duties such as loading/unloading materials, trench digging, sign and pavement marking assistance, snow removal, and custodial tasks. Requires basic education, a valid driver’s license, physical stamina, and occasional certifications depending on assignment (e.g., flagger, confined space, pesticide application).

Description Provides unskilled and semi-skilled laborer work for a variety of departments in connection with a variety of public service projects. Maintains parks and athletic fields; provides unskilled manual labor repairing or installing water and gas pipelines; provides courier service; and removes debris after storm events. Sets up for special events and snow removal and may include providing direction to community service workers.

The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

When Assigned to Public Works:
  • Loads and unloads gravel, asphalt, dirt, timber, chemicals and other materials, tools and equipment;
  • Cuts grass and trees, rakes leaves;
  • Digs trenches and ditches;
  • Cleans catch basins, manholes and sewer lines;
  • Performs various custodial duties;
    Picks up paper, leaves and debris on public property and streets;
    Collects leaves, brush, debris and other materials;
  • Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning gutters and patching holes;
  • Assists with the fabrication and installation of traffic signs;
  • Assists with painting and measuring traffic lines and markings;
    Removes and refurbishes damaged or non‑legible signs;
    Removes and replaces damaged poles;
  • Places and removes street barricades and other warning devices; picks up and delivers supplies and materials;
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Supports special events.
  • Provides emergency response during severe weather (snow, floods, storms, etc.).
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.
Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and basic computer skills (when assigned to Utilities). No job experience required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria
  • Based on assignment, the following may be required:
    • Confined Space Certificate
    • Flagger Certification
    • Registered Technical Pesticide Application
Job Knowledge

No knowledge of specific work. Ability to learn and general knowledge of having a job such as timeliness and receiving directions.

Reading

Basic:
Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words.

Basic:
Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Independence and Decision-Making

Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
