Custodian - Head

General Definition of Work

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Head Custodian is responsible for assisting in the supervision of Custodians and maintaining safe and clean school buildings and facilities for students, staff and visitors.

Essential Functions

• Assist in the supervision of Custodians
• Perform routine semi-skilled custodial work in the care and cleaning of school buildings
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with site staff, parents and visitors, officials and employees
• Organize daily activities and maintain scheduled duties.
• Must be able to lift and/or move 25

• Knowledge on usage of custodial equipment including buffer, side by side, scrubber, hygienica machine, and wetvac
• Sweep or dust mop floors daily in assigned area
• Vacuum carpets daily and /or shampoo carpets as needed to maintain in good condition
• Scrub and clean toilets including mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, sinks, etc., and ensure restrooms are properly supplied
• Dust furniture, walls, window sills, baseboards, chalk trays, and other woodworks, including those that require ladders
• Wash walls, woodwork, blinds, etc., including those that require ladders
• Clean drinking fountains
• Clean and polish brass or other metal fixtures
• Clean any area as required for accidents and illnesses, including during lunch periods
• Move furniture as required and supervise the set-up of special events
• Spray, buff, scrub, strip, and refinish all types of floors
• Secure buildings
• Remove trash from building and place in dumpster
• Replace light bulbs in overhead fixtures, including those needing ladders
• Shovel snow, cut grass, trim shrubbery, etc.
• Maintain availability 24 hours a day if necessary due to emergency or snow removal operations
• Ensure all custodial equipment is clean and well maintained
• Ensure all storage rooms are clean and organized
• Maintain building in a safe, clean condition and report needed repairs or any emergency/safety issue to Building Principal and Maintenance Staff by why of a work order

• Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates
• Ability to instruct and train employees in building operations
• Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials and employees
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
• Ability to get along well with others
• Thorough in performance of responsibilities
• Basic computer skills, including Windows Operating System, emphasis on Outlook

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
