Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Greater Dayton School (GDS) is Ohio’s first non-religious private PreK–8 school exclusively for students from under-resourced backgrounds. Fully funded by a local philanthropist, GDS provides complete scholarships to deliver a world-class, whole-child education — combining rigorous academics with on‑campus pediatric care, mental health services, daily fitness, and nutrition support. We invest over $30,000 per child annually because every child deserves the best, regardless of income.

Our state‑of‑the‑art campus — built in 2023 — spans roughly 100,000 square feet across five stories on an 11‑acre site that includes a turf field and track and a mulch playground. We are seeking a hands‑on, mission‑driven Facility Supervisor to keep this campus safe, clean, and running smoothly for our students and staff.

About

The Role

The Facility Supervisor owns the day‑to‑day upkeep, safety, and functionality of GDS’s building and grounds. This is a hands‑on role — you will personally handle much of the maintenance work (painting, patching, minor repairs, furniture assembly) while managing outside vendors for specialized work such as landscaping, complex electrical, and major equipment repairs. This person reports directly to the Director of Operations.

This person also serves as the on‑call contact for facility emergencies (e.g., HVAC failure, burst pipe, alarm activation). This is not a shared rotation — they are the point person. These emergencies are rare, but they do happen.

Growth & Compensation Path:
Candidates who also bring managerial experience — building schedules, supervising a custodial team, and holding staff accountable to performance metrics — will take on direct oversight of our custodial team and be compensated at a higher tier accordingly. This experience is not required; GDS has operations staff in place who can manage the custodial team if the incoming Facility Supervisor does not have this background.

What We Are Looking For
  • Hands‑On & Resourceful:
Comfortable doing real physical work yourself — painting, patching drywall, basic electrical and equipment repairs, furniture assembly — not just overseeing it.
  • Systems‑Minded:
Can monitor and troubleshoot building systems, including HVAC, and know when an issue needs to be escalated to a specialist vendor.
  • Safety‑First:
Proactively spot hazards on the playground, turf field, and track and resolve them before they become incidents.
  • Reliable Under Pressure:
Willing to be the on‑call contact for facility emergencies. They’re rare, but when one happens, you’re ready to respond.
  • Vendor Manager:
Can source, coordinate, and hold outside contractors (landscaping, electrical, equipment) accountable for quality and cost.
  • Team‑Oriented (a plus):
If you have managed a custodial or maintenance team before — building schedules, coaching staff, and holding people accountable to metrics — that is a meaningful plus and impacts compensation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Building & Grounds Maintenance:
Maintain a 100,000‑square‑foot, five‑story building and 11‑acre campus, including a turf field/track and mulch playground; perform day‑to‑day maintenance such as painting, patching walls, and general repairs, concentrated during summer, fall, and winter breaks.
  • HVAC Oversight:
Monitor building HVAC systems, perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs, and coordinate with vendors for complex service and repairs.
  • Vendor Management:
Manage vendor relationships for landscaping, electrical work, and equipment repairs beyond your own capabilities.
  • Custodial Support:
Assist the Director of Operations in deploying and leveraging custodial staff; clean common areas as needed.
  • Equipment & Furniture:
Complete equipment repairs and electrical work within your skill set; assemble furniture upon delivery.
  • Safety Inspections:
Conduct routine safety inspections of the playground, turf field, and track, and address hazards promptly.
  • Life‑Safety & Building System Inspections:
Coordinate and track recurring inspections for fire suppression, sprinklers, fire hydrants, elevator, generator, Ansul system, underslab monitoring, and electrical breakers; elevate to vendors as needed and maintain…
