Job Description

POSITION GOAL

To provide a high level of expertise of heavy equipment operation and functions in order to maximize a safe environment for students and employees of Volusia County Schools.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Work hours and locations will change as the need arises. Perform all duties according to scheduled hours and locations as assigned.
  • Assure the safety of children comes first.
  • Abide by all security procedures.
  • Represent Volusia County School Board (VCSB) and the Department with a positive and professional service oriented demeanor.
  • Work as part of a team by establishing and maintaining working relationships that foster efficiency, productivity, quality results, and promote cooperation with administrators, fellow employees, students, faculty and the public.
  • Satisfactorily complete the on-site operational testing of chain saw operation, asphalt and concrete repair, and chain link repair when directed.
  • Responsible for the operation of heavy duty equipment such as forklift, front end loader, back hoe, bucket truck, dump truck and various types of tractors with related equipment as assigned.
  • Operate heavy equipment used to relocate portable classrooms and assist in the set-up and removal.
  • Assist or conduct repairs of catch basins and storm water run-offs.
  • Responsible for trimming and cutting trees.
  • Responsible for assigned mowing operations.
  • Responsible for the patchwork of driveways, parking lots and sidewalks as needed.
  • Responsible for the repair of chain link fences as required.
  • Operate other equipment required to fulfill the mission.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports and all related lists/forms for each job and submit to supervisory personnel as required.
  • Assist in the assessment, planning and implementation of preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing as assigned.
  • Conduct a daily review and maintenance of assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Report any damage/dangerous or hazardous situations related to work orders, equipment or vehicles to supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean orderly work environment which includes equipment and service vehicles.
  • Abide by and support safety rules/ standards when using tools and equipment, which includes wearing required safety equipment and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements.
  • Wear provided designated departmental uniforms.
  • Attend and/ or conduct cross‑training sessions with others in the Division and apply skills/ knowledge obtained.
  • Respond during times of disaster/ emergency, as the need arises, including evenings and weekends.
  • Perform effectively in emergency situations.
  • Operate school board vehicles, when assigned, in accordance with operational procedures and School Board Policy 505.
  • Provide personal tools as required, to perform assigned work.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisors, Multi‑Trades.
  • Operate the trash clam truck in collection of debris and yard waste as required by the pre‑determined schedule.
  • Operate the garbage vehicle for collection and disposal of garbage as required by the pre‑determined schedule.
  • Operate the sludge truck for collect and disposal of sludge on an as‑needed basis.

    Required Qualifications /Certifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent
    • Minimum of three (3) years experience in operations of heavy equipment and various types of tractors with related equipment
    • Must be available after working hours (on‑call) as a part of the emergency and disaster team
    • Must be available for scheduled shift work
    • Must be able to attend and complete various on‑the‑job training sessions
    • Provide personal hand tools in accordance with established department list
    • Currently hold or obtain a Temporary Commercial Driver License (Class “A”) required road testing to be completed within a ninety‑day (90) probation period
